If you are looking to do a graphics card and CPU, NVIDIA and Intel are the way to go. AMD CPU tech is going on 3 years old and their graphics processors are getting old as well, and the 390's seem to be in limbo right now, so for the best upgrades it's NVIDIA and Intel. If you are looking for longevity (will last a long time tech-wise) go Core i7 and GTX 9-series (960, 970, or 98). Forget about anything from AMD coming close to the 980, except a CrossFireX array of R9's.
