I'm extremely unhappy with my current SLI setup. Put simply, I hate SLI, and I don't know why I always delude myself into getting that second card. It never works out for the best, as it introduces more problems than it's worth.

I have two questions, but I'd like #2 to be answered regardless of #1 please if possible.

#1: What's the best option for someone who's fed up with SLI and is unhappy with 2 780s in SLI. I was thinking burning my earnings on a Titan X.

#2: Just out of curiosity (even if you think a Titan X would not be a good choice here), how WOULD a Titan X compare to two 780s overall in terms of power? There's not many benchmarks that specifically pit these 2 setups together.

Crossfire...? Honestly I have been using Crossfire since the 48XX series and I always been more than satisfied. You can even desactivate one of your card and play as a single GPU platform if you require to. I see some fram hickup in high memory demanding games at 4k, but that's it.

A titan X is, simply put, a huge waste of money. The 390x is around the corner with a whopping 8GB of new technology ram. Just wait a couple of months and get one. That's your best option.

I never had a problem with SLI with the exception of an optimum profile not being available on a few games' release dates. Other than that, it always worked flawlessly for me. I think you might have something else going on?

A single Titan X is impressive and has the extra RAM that is beneficial for higher resolutions, especially 4K and above.

I don't have very many (read hardly any) problems with SLI or Xfire; however pertaining to the 780s in SLI, the only real benefit would be the VRAM, unless you have the 6GB version of the 780s. While I don't have 780s I do have 780Tis in SLI which should be fairly close in comparing to the Titan X.

Using Guru3D settings at 3840x2160 my 780TIs in SLI are:
45% faster than Titan X Hitman Absolution
56% faster in Bioshock Infinite
68% faster in Tomb Raider
22% faster in Thief
And using the Welcome to the Jungle level and Andantech settings my 780TIs are 41% faster in Crysis 3 at 4k than a single Titan X (and of note, 21% faster than 980s in SLI).

You've got a great setup with 2x780s; which games specifically are you having SLI issues with?

If you're talking about Watchdogs, SLI issues abound on the geforce forums and not just with 700 series GPUS; 900s as well. Game is smoother without using SLI. Ubisoft really sucks at optimizing their games for current hardware in general as far as I can tell.

Yeah, very frustrating. I do have it running relatively smoothly now using a single 780Ti...BUT...I still get occasional "stopped responding" moments as well as chugs/freezes (not frequent, but I can still count on them; also not VRAM which is is well under 3GB usage). I'm a bit flabbergasted how the game is
1. released with such terrible performance
2. Ubisoft support refuses to accept there's a problem (their solutions range from disabling steam overlay to installing windows updates, etc. but always leaving uplay open lol)
3. Their last patch seems to have made things worse, especially for SLI

It's really too bad because the game is a blast when it works.

In short should I upgrade my twin EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB SC running in SLI to a single or even SLI 980 setup ... read below. Don't be offended that is just how I think.

It has been more than 6 months since the OP posted this thread but I don't understand (even 6+ months ago) all the posts that seem to dismiss 4k/UHD/2160P gaming. We are all looking for the best performance so with that in mind "4k" gaming should be the goal...well until 8k displays catch on at least lol. I guess to just do not understand the posts that say "XYZ" card or configuration is plenty "UNLESS" the poster is looking for 4k gaming which "I am sure you are not"....??? I personally own two EVGA GeForce GTX 780 6GB SC which I believe at the time I paid $675 each for. They are still kicking a$$ and taking names running in SLI. As an early adopter I have a Samsung 4k 28" monitor and have pre ordered an Oculus Rift. My point is so many enthusiasts seem to discount "4k" gaming which in reality that is EXACTLY where gaming is gone. No, my monitor is not 144hz and does not have Gsync but then again I also run my own business and have a life and family so the early 4k Sammi display looks great to me :).

OP here.
I ended up buying a GTX980 TI. Gained about 4% in speed and about 500% in reduction in stress. Getting rid of SLI was the best thing I've ever done. I love it. Also, 1440p without stuttering is a huge plus! Right now I'm playing the new Tomb Raider at 1440 with *MOSTLY* max settings at *MOSTLY* around 60fps. Avg ~56-57
