Heya,

I feel i should upgrade my PC since some games require the 2500k already.
I don't know where to start. I already looked at i5 4690k but not sure if it's worth it at this time since Skylake is comming later this year.

PC is mostly used for gaming LoL, WoW ,Assassins Creed, FarCry

Budget
€ 500 / £ 360 / $ 530

PC Specs:
CPU: i5 2500
Cooler: Antex H2O 620
GPU: Sapphire 7850 OC 3GB
MOBO: ASRock Z68 Extreme3 Gen3
PSU: Unknown brand 450W

Solution
It's overkill for LoL & WoW. And I certainly can say that it can play top titles more or less. You might wanna be interested in upgrading GPU but only if it's worth to upgrade. Vulkan and DX12 are on the way I'd certainly wait for all new hardware with new software support and game developers to make some titles on next tech.

Are you not getting the fps you want? or are you thinking you should upgrade before that time comes? I would wait untill you aren't satisfied with your performance then upgrade.

You should be looking at GPU and PSU upgrades before even thinking about replacing the CPU really.

And even then, only if you need to. The 7850 is still fine for 1080p / medium or better on most games, it's just that there's been a rash of poorly optimised games in the last 18 months or so

WoW thanks all for fast replay :)

It's a 2500 non k T.T dont know why i bourght the 2500 all those years ago

On Medium most of the time yes but sometimes games get huge fps laggs i dont know where the performance lose is comming from. It may be the drivers tho.

true it is overkill vor LoL and WoW. But for example when i play Minecraft Archage or Tera i get huge fps drops random. I dont know where it is comming from. Its not only in open spaces with to much to render but also inside buildings.

Does DX12 really impacts the CPU usage that much?

I know about tera, low fps are because of it's horrible game architecture. People are buying xeons to play that game because it is relying too much on floating point calculations & high multi-threading model in the game. So it's game developer's fault , these things are oberved over a year ago and they may have fixed it, I don't know about it. Don't worry you are not out of that league.

You didn't mention amount of RAM and the frequency . That might be throttling your fps.

DX12 API suggests that developers can push different rendering tasks from different threads, so that will encourage multi threading in games. It doesn't mean it takes more processing power. The new techniques to draw graphics will evolve and take over current methods(2-3 years form now). It's still in development and there are lots of things to improve s final face will be a bit different. You will see it by the end of year. With launching of new CPUs by the end of the year , the time will decide where we are going. But don't expect much from new processors since companies are focusing on mobile tech now.

Ram clock speed would have a major affect on your fps if you are running an APU.

"Ram clock speed would have a major affect on your fps if you are running an APU." - true but there are cases running on 2GB 1333MHz stick would glitch/shutter on your GTX card.....
And there's significant bandwidth difference between 1333 and 1600MHz. 1600 is a regular now. APUs are suggested to run on 1866 or higher for better performance of GPU. Though it's speed also determines CPU performance a little bit, it's likely the RAM size that I'm concerned about.

As we talk about fps drops There are so many factors that affect it. such as power draw, thermal status of GPU, bad PSU, ventilation etc....
