Windows 7 randomly reboots while Idle

Hi there,

We currently have two Dell Precision T5610s with the following:
Dual Xenon E5-2630s
Nvidia Quadro K4000
32GB 1866MHz DDR3 ECC

Both of these workstations have been experiencing random reboots while idle. No bluescreen, no minidump, nothing. It's as if someone just walked over and shutdown the PCs normally. We've opened a support ticket with Dell and they've sent us replacement CPUs, motherboards, and power supplies. None of these have stopped the random shutdowns. I've disabled every power option available in the control panel AND in the bios and it still happens. The odd thing is how sporadic it happens. Sometimes it happens a couple times a week, sometimes it won't happen for a month. The only thing that I can replace that hasn't already been replaced is the Graphics Card. Is it possible that the GPU in both PCs is causing this? It's starting to turn into a giant headache as we've tried everything else we can think of.

I'm well aware that there are multiple threads about this, but none of the solutions for other folks seem to be helping.

Thanks for the help,

Daniel

If it's not too much of a pain, I'd say test out the GPUs and see if that is indeed the cause. You've come this far and did all those other tests already, what's one last test you know? I also see how it's doing it at random while IDLE, but maybe it's overheating in some shape or form? Where and how do you have it placed? Airflow optimal?

Airflow is optimal, no immediate obstruction and all fans are working. These are AutoCAD stations that are used to a pretty heavy load, so I don't see how it could overheat when just sitting at rest. It's just odd. I believe we have at least one more workstation with the same card, I'll swap one out with it and see if it continues to randomly reboot. The worst part is that it's so unpredictable to the point where some of the steps we've taken have seemed like the solutions until two or three weeks pass and they reboot again.

Is there anyway to ensure that the GPUs don't have some type of sleep state or something that could potentially send a shutdown signal to windows? I have quite a bit of experience with AMD cards, but can't say the same for Nvidia...

Here's a shot-in-the-dark: Check for stability of input AC voltage to the workstations. Perhaps an AC voltage stabilizer or UPS may help. It could be that when the incoming voltage drops below a threshold, the pc reboots, or it could be spike in the voltage triggering the reboot though I would think that a spike may damage parts instead (conjecture; I'm not an electrician nor engineer).

I can test them. Both PCs are plugged into a surge protector, but none of the CAD stations are currently hooked up to a UPS (to my knowledge, at least). I will test both on Monday and let you know if I find anything.

Okay, so I don't believe it's the outlet or surge protectors as there multiple work stations are plugged into the the same outlet, yet the other workstations connected to the outlet aren't having any issues at all.

Guess we'll move to testing the graphics cards/swap out graphics cards. With all other components and ideas tested, the GPU, RAM, and HDD are the last things to check, right?

EDIT: Memtest and chkdsk have been run without error, but the possibility of either causing the issue is still there, I think
