The Asus A78M-A is compatible with the A6 7400K. Since it is an A78, it is sometimes needed to update the bios, like you said.
Usually it isn't a problem though. Does the Athlon not work at all?
EDIT: On the asus website it says it is compatible.

Have you ruled out it wasnt a broken component? the CPU should still work even if the bios is not correct.
