Hey guys!,

So I am in dire need of some advice from the experts here. I purchased a new PC in January which effectively ran for 3 days and I have been working on fixing it since! Long RMA times and just plain confusion have left me baffled as to my next steps.

So here is the ORIGINAL January build:

AMD FX 8350 ( NO OC) Evo 212 cooler
570gtx Fermi
Corsair MX750 modular PSU
Gigabyte 990 FXA-UD3 Mobo
16GB DDR3 1866 G Skill Ram
256GB SSD

After assembly, this build worked fine for a few days. However, I decided to swap in two ATI 5870s from my old build and bumped the PSU to my Corsair TX850, and the computer never worked again. The first troubleshooting I did was to put the computer back to the original build, and still nothing. Next I swapped in one GPU at a time to see if one was dead, and nothing. I did the same with the PSUs. The symptoms are as follows during every test:

The computer will turn on for just a moment then instantly powerdown (no POST) screen never lights up.

The computer will turn on and run for 30-60 seconds but will turn of (No screen still)

Finally, after one last attempt, the MOBO speaker squealed and smoke came out of the top of the computer!!! This actually occurred with the 750W PSU in it.

I pulled all the components back out (Minus the MOBO and CPU) and put them all into another build and they all worked. So using the limited knowledge I have and some light researching, I came to the conclusion it has to be either the PSU, the CPU or the MOBO. After inspecting each piece, I noticed the MOBO smelled burned. This makes sense given the smoke. The CPU showed no sign of damage so I decided to RMA the Mobo and hope for the best. After an issue with New-egg over me leaving out a SATA cable out of the box, 3 months later I got my new MOBO! I Reassembled the computer with the 5870CF and 850 watt PSU and BOOM! exact same symptoms! Only turns on momentarily or it will remain on for 30-60 seconds but no screen activity, then it will shut off. Remembering the smoke and horror of the last time I pushed my luck I decided to reach out to anyone who has more knowledge than me. This is a brand new MOBO, the same processor and PSU. I don't have a way to test the CPU in a different build because I know no one with an AM3+ socket. I don't have enough pieces to test the PSU at this point either. I began the warranty process for the 8350 but I am still clueless as to which part in the build is failing.

Thanks so much to anyone who is still reading after my confusing rant, but please any advice would be much appreciated!

Jeff

No I did not, I will do that tomorrow. My only issue is that if it continues to fail, it will be hard to deduce if it is the processor or the MoBo since I dont have another AM3+ chip to test against it.

Really it was my fault. So I RMA'd the MoBo probably mid January. I noticed it was approved and waited a few weeks. After about 6 weeks a box came, but it was the exact same MoBo I had sent them. Turns out I had left out a Sata cable originally in the box and they refused to honor it. So I spent time arguing with them to give me another RMA which they finally did. Then I have been waiting until spring break to rebuilt the PC.
