Display issues with new laptop and external monitor resolution?

Hi, I have a new laptop which is defaulted at 3840x1620. I have connected my external monitor via DVI in the monitor and HDMI in the laptop as there is no VGA/DVi in the computer, and no HDMI in the monitor. The max monitor resolution I can see is 1600.900, and everyhting becomes huge when I drag it over from the laptop screen. If I set both at 1600x900 it's huge everywhere! Is there a way to fix this or do I have to upgrade the external monitor? I have a Dell Inspiron 7548 laptop and an Acer LCD S201 monitor. Any help appreciated!

Well usually I would suggest a resolution the same as the other monitor, but since that resolution is so awkward and non existent on an actual monitor, I would have to say you would be good with a 1440p screen. But things will still look "Bigish" Less big but still big. The issue is that your laptop has a massive, awkward, resolution.
