Hi techno-peeps, hoping someone can help me before I have a nervous breakdown! I am not very technologically minded (but I like to press buttons) so Im sorry if this is a stupid question!.......

Ok so I have an eMachines laptop running on Windows Vista 32bit, few months ago it started going seriously slow when starting up, opening programs, loading internet pages.... basically it was slow doing everything, so after researching (and some button pressing) I managed to figure out that it was probably riddled with viruses. I backed up my files and used the recovery disks to strip it down then reinstall everything to new! For the actual desktop/programs etc it worked fantastic, the laptop was running fast like brand new.

However, when connecting to the internet the problem starts again... if I connect to a network it slows everything down, opening the browser, loading web pages and opening files/programs on the desktop takes 5 or more minutes or freezes (even with no browser open). I have tried different networks/connections such as my home WiFi, mums WiFi, work WiFi, Internet cafe's WiFi and the Ethernet cable. I have also tried using different browsers.

I have another laptop, an Ipad and an Android phone that all connect to all the above networks without any problems and load web pages really quickly so it must be a problem with eMachines laptop! I'm totally baffled as to why the desktop slows and freezes while connected though? if I disconnect the network when it goes waaaay too slow it takes maybe 15 minutes for the laptop to return to its normal desktop speed?!?!?!

I have updated the drivers from the manufacturers website (they were up to date though I think), I ran in safe mode with networking which didn't make a difference, it was still just as slow when connected. I have reinstalled the whole damn laptop 3 times but that doesn't make a difference either!

Please can someone help meeeee???

If you just did the refresh to Vista, there are TONS of updates since then, so it's probably Windows Update trying to download them.

If you can, hook it up via ethernet cable and let it download updates.. this may take several hours with downloading and installing... and restarting.

Personally I'd suggest you try updating to Windows 8.1, and Windows 10 when it comes out (If you get windows 7 or 8, Windows 10 update is free).
If you're using the integrated wireless or wired adapter, it's not uncommon for them to have issues after they've got some miles on them. I'd suggest buying a USB wireless adapter which you can get fairly cheap and try that. Are you having issues with wired connections too or have you even tried it with an Ethernet cable attached to the router?

I wasn't referring to drivers... but ALL windows updates... there's a ton of them if you are just installing the OS from scratch.

Yeah, I'm going to agree that ditching Vista, which was known to be a quirky and slow ass POS, is probably a good idea. I'd upgrade to at least 7 and preferably 8.1. Vista didn't even make it out of the gate before it was decided it needed to get put down. It was about as bad as Windows ME.

Hi thanks for the replies, I'm just starting the upgrade to windows 7 now. I have tried the Ethernet cable which made no difference, Iv also tried safe mode but that is the same ridiculously slow! is it normal for the desktop to go that slow too though wen connected? I'm curious coz it took 8 minutes to start task manager last night but within a minute of disconnecting the network everything that was frozen or loading caught up an stayed fast!! I'm starting to lose hope now, other than this 1 issue it's a solid well performing computermeBob

As I said, there is probably an issue with either the device or the Vista compatible driver. Disabling the device and using a USB network adapter is probably a better option, but you might be ok with your current device after the Win7 upgrade. Windows 7 has much better hardware compatibility and driver frameworks than Vista.
