It depends on your motherboard model as some can only use up to 4GB per slot. Post your motherboard model please.
Two modules are preferred over four modules, since four modules loads/stresses the computer more than two modules would. So 2 x 8 GB dual channel kit would be the better choice. But as mentioned above, the motherboard may not support 8 GB modules, if so then 4 x 4 GB kit would have to be used instead.

If you have a dual channel mobo (AMD, 1150, 1155) then 2x8GB if mobo supports 8GB sticks, if on 2011 or 2011 V3 then 4x4GB to utilize quad channel
