Hp laptop stopped working. Have brand new Dell desktop. Pulled hp laptop hard drive...connected to Dell desktop running windows 7 via sata to usb adapter/connector. When I go into my computer...Windows repeatedly (it doesn't stop, new Windows keep popping up even before I can close them out) tells me to reformat drive L, M, N...usually stopping on N....the drive letters change rapidly. I cannot use safe removal tool as it doesn't even show up there. I want files from this hard drive. But I was wondering if there was something I can do before taking the hard drive in for data recovery.
Thank you in advance for any advice.

Dashing_star may be on to something re a defective SATA-to-USB adapter. We ran into so many problems with those devices that we stopped using them a few years ago. We only use HDDs installed in a USB external enclosure.

Anyway, since you're running a desktop PC why not try installing the HDD internally? Perhaps you'll luck out and be able to access its contents that way.

I agree with that. Trying it directly connected via SATA, with no adapter, is probably a really good idea. Although if it caused your laptop to fail and is exhibiting this behavior now, regardless of how it's connected, the trouble seems a lot more likely to be directly related to the drive health or something on the drive than to an adapter. At least connecting directly via SATA will allow you to eliminate a few possibilities though.
