I have a toshiba laptop. I was getting a S.M.A.R.T Disc error so I purchased a new hard drive. Once I installed the new harddrive it is now telling me that the operating system was not found. I backed it up on a flash drive but now I cannot figure out how to boot my computer from the flash drive.

To change the boot options:

Turn on the laptop, and there should be a thing called the splash screen (usually flashes the logo) with options on the lower part of the screen that say FOR EXAMPLE: f12 for boot menu, f10 for bios

If there is a button that allows you to go to the boot menu, press it, and select the usb stick as the primary boot source (it must be plugged in).

If there is not an option that says boot menu, then select the one for BIOS. In the bios, make sure you dont mess with stuff. Find the boot menu, change the priority to the USB stick and get the hell outa there :)

Best of luck.

What did you back up to the flash drive? Did you create a recovery disk or just copied files to it? Before you can use a new disk you have to re-install Windows on it. Toshiba can send you a set of restore disks if yours are not working or you never made a set.
