Using an SFC command that points to a HDD with Windows 8.1

I'm attempting to fix a friends laptop, and in order to validate that his OS isn't the issue, I want to run an SFC command on his HDD externally (that is, having the SFC command point to his HDD, while not being run inside of his HDD).

My question however, is will this even work given that his laptop runs Windows 8.1, when my desktop (which will be executing the SFC command) is only running Windows Vista?

so... you're remoting into his laptop and running SFC?

cause that's the only way i can see it work. it has to be his OS which executes the command, i don't believe you can externally operate it. you have to at least remote into the system to run the SFC

and if you're talking about 2 system disks (hard drives) in the same laptop with, then you'll need to execute the SFC from the drive with the os you want to check. the SFC is OS install specific. i do not believe it can be "directed" toward another install.

I wasn't familiar with those switches, thank you.

Though those commands appear to be what the OP is looking for, i suspect it would be part of a domain with a domain admin level access to remotely exicute those, that or it would be for running the SFC from a Linux OS on the same HD or at least on the same computer, or something to that effect; those commands do not appear to allow remote execution of SFC like the OP is asking.

Ah, I didn't catch the last part of the OP. No, you cannot run SFC in Windows Vista to scan/fix a Windows 8 system, you must use the same OS as the target.

@ingtar33: SFC doesn't give one whit about domain membership. The OP was asking how to point a copy of SFC running on his computer to an external installation of Windows. The switches I provided do that.

really. I'll take your word for it. Though i remain skeptical i'll just have to give it a try sometime.

Maybe I need to reiterate a few things.

1. I do know what the command is that I'm using
2. My friend only has an internal HDD (Windows 8). I am plugging that internal HDD into a free SATA connection on my computer.
3. The main hard drive on my computer (Windows Vista) is going to execute the SFC command that points to my friend's HDD once my friend's HDD is connected inside my computer.
4. My question therefore, is will the SFC command still execute properly even though it's pointing to a HDD with a newer version of Windows on it (Vista -> Windows 8).
