Random Freezes While Idle

Hello, I've been having this issue for a while with my pc, but I've been lazily putting it off.

I've recently been thinking about upgrading some parts, so this is an issue I'd like to fix before doing so. The problem is my computer randomly freezing. The odd thing is, it occurs most often if I leave my computer idle, or sometimes if I'm doing something that isn't very resource intensive such as browsing the internet. I can't remember the last time I had my pc completely freeze while playing a game. I play games quite a bit, and I would assume an issue with freezing would be worse while playing a game. Usually what happens is just a complete freeze of the system with a loud buzzing noise, but I very rarely have gotten a blue screen. I understand that the problem could be any number of things, but I'm unsure where to start in order to figure out what the exact issue is. I have a suspicion that it could be my GPU, but I'm not positive. Any help I could get on this is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Sorry, I meant to update my post with that!

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium

Motherboard: ASUS P8Z77-M

Processor: Intel i5-3570k @3.40GHz

GPU: Nvidia GTX 550ti

8GB RAM

600 W Power Supply

Western Digital Blue WD5000AAKX 500GB HDD

I actually now suspect that it may be my hard drive. I was just pre-loading GTA V last night and my computer froze on me several times. Now that I think about it freezes happen most often when I am downloading a game on Steam.
