Error no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed

Hello everyone,
I recently decided to turn my Acer M3470g into an Ubuntu 14.10 server. I downloaded the iso file and ran it on vmware and the installation worked without any glitches. I then installed the iso file onto my hdd, erasing my old Windows 7 OS, with a USB. After the installation was complete, I took the USB out and turned my computer back on. After a few seconds, I receive: Error no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed. I made sure that in BIOS the main hdd was selected first to boot from. I also checked to make sure my hdd was connected to the power supply. I have also tried installing multiple other iso files that I know work with the same result. My hdd was not acting up until I uninstalled Windows and tried putting Ubuntu OS onto it so I'm pretty sure hdd isn't failing me. Is there anything I could do (software, etc) that would be able to fix this problem? Thanks for any advice anyone can give me!

What do you mean that you installed the iso to the HDD? The proper procedure is to install the iso to a USB stick, boot into Ubuntu with the USB stick, then click the "Install Ubuntu" icon. The error would indicate that the system is not properly installed on your HDD (alternatively, it could mean the HDD has failed, but that is unlikely if it was working previously).

Thanks for retrying to help me out on this one. I did the proper procedure of using the iso file on a usb stick to install Ubuntu. After the installation was complete it told me to take out the usb and restart my computer. Once I restarted my computer, however, I still received the error message. Since I accidentally deleted the acer hidden partition would this be the cause of it? I've tried several OS installation iso's but none will boot up after being installed. Shouldn't the new OS install a boot partition to allow the computer to boot up? If I bought a windows 8 OS cd would this solve the problem since it would have a recovery disk in it?

It could have something to do with a hidden partition. If BIOS is going there first it may not be finding your Ubuntu partition. I don't think Windows would solve the problem.

Did you try reformatting the HDD prior to the installation? I wonder if it is trying to install inside an empty partition or something to that effect.

I believe I did reformat the hdd before trying to install Ubuntu. Just incase I didn't, how would I go about doing so? Would it be easier for me to just buy a new hdd, or since the acer's hidden partition was deleted would I still receive the same error message? Thanks again for your help. Just talking to someone about this is making me feel a little bit better about not taking a sledgehammer to it lol.

To reformat it, boot into Ubuntu, then from the applications menu look for a utility called "Disks". This should allow you to see all the partitions on each drive. If there is an extra partition that doesn't look right, that could be the source of the problem.

Yes, buying a new HDD should work if all your other hardware is in order, but hopefully it doesn't come to that.

If you don't get any luck on this board, you might try one of the linux specific boards such as http://ubuntuforums.org/
