Half memory not recognized: Is my motherboard fried?

I looked at a number of threads here with similar issues, but none quite the same as mine.

My system is Dell Studio XPS 8100 with core i7 860 CPU and 8GB RAM (2x2x2x2), as from the factory. I have not upgraded or changed the RAM sticks that came with my computer years ago,
I have had other issues, such as having to do a system repair restore after harddrive failure in the past year, and recently replacing the graphics card.

After my recent round of maintenance I noticed windows 7 is showing 8GB RAM installed but only 3.6 usable. So I checked the bios and it showed only 4GB installed.

I did a lot of the recommended stuff. I checked the seating of the RAM sticks. I ran a memtest for a couple of hours and found no errors. I updated the bios and flashed the bios. No change.

I started booting up with one individual stick installed in slot 1 (as numbered on the board). Each one was recognized correctly in bios. Then I started trying other combinations. Here are my results:

2GB Stick in slot 1: Good
Stick in slot 1 and 2 (by the mobo numbering): Only 2GB recongized.
Single stick only in slot 3: No boot, 4 beeps
Sticks and slots 3 and 4, no boot and 4 beeps
Finally, 2GB sticks in slots 1 and 3: 4GB recognized.

I never expected that one to work because I would think they would need to be in 1 and 2 if slot 3 didn't work independently.

Not only were they recognized in bios, but windows 7 system shows 4GB installed and all usable, which is actually an improvement over all four sticks.

Later, I put all the sticks back in and got the same result I started with, 4GB recognized in bios, 8GB in windows but with only 3.6 usable.

I thought maybe the board was reserving 4GB for a integrated video memory that I didn't know it had, since it came with a graphics card installed, but there are no such graphics settings to be found in bios.

Is there anything else to look for before concluding that some motherboard hardware error?

I may try getting two 4GB sticks to put in slots 1 and 3 hoping I'll at least get the 8GB back I was supposed to have, because I really don't want to mess with a major overhaul of this five year old machine or spend a bunch of money on a new PC at this point.

There is a possibility that the problem may lie in your settings.

Advanced Settings>Advanced>Performance Setting>Advanced>Virtual Memory>Change>Tick box with system managed size(if it is already ticked click the top tick box"automatically manage paging file")
If that does not work then it may lie in the motherboard.

Interesting.

I have seen the memory issues you are talking about in Windows. But not had the BIOS displaying 4GB and Windows saying there is 8GB, that makes little sense.

Windows solution was usually a complete re-install of the OS. I've tried reg hacking around Hardware Reserved memory with no explanation, just ends up making a system unbootable. (Resource Monitor, if you want to check there)

Similar issue to yours I ran into last week here on Tom's was a system that no longer recognized 2GB sticks as 2GB sticks, they kept showing up as 1GB sticks in the BIOS, even when used as singles. BIOS wiping didn't fix it. Almost like half the memory controller just died. (Went unsolved as far as I know)

Since yours are still showing up as the right size when used individually or in pairs, not sure what the problem could be.

It's the 64 bit version.

I tried this just now. Automatic was already checked. So I maxed out the total paging size to 6082. Didn't change anything as far as the usable memory.

I'm not sure but you could try to reinstall windows(first backup).
It may be a risky move I guess. Do the copper pins attach correctly on the ram slots? Maybe one is damaged or worn out.

As far as I can tell they do. Nothing seems funny about any of the slots.

Anybody know of a motherboard repacement I could get that would work with my current hardware but also give me some upgrade room to something more modern at some point? But then I would probably have to buy a new full install of windows, because I don't think Dell's OEM version will work with a new board.

Sadly your hardware only worked for a single generation. There is no motherboard that will accept your CPU that would provide an upgrade path. You would need to buy a CPU as well, and honestly, memory as well. 4x2GB kit of 1333 is a little dated, but you could use it for a while until you could upgrade

LGA1156 1st Gen
LGA1155 2nd and 3rd Gen
LGA1150 4th and 5th Gen
LGA1151 6th gen (upcoming) (DDR4 likely, but some boards may offer dual support)

That's what I was afraid of. Looks like I'm buying or building a new desktop. I guess I can't even use the same Windows 7 install if I build a new one. Not much sense in getting a same-replacement mainboard just to keep my outdated technology for a couple more years. Time for an upgrade.

You should spend some time researching, in order to use your money wisely.

After I gave up on everything else and pretty much wrote the thing off as a lost cause, I tried cleaning the sockets of the RAM and GFX and looked to make sure there was no excess heat sync on the CPU or something, but I just made it worse and now it's totally dead. I might try to get a motherboard replacement in the future and make a TV server out of it, but I found a great deal on a new tower so I just bought another one.
