PWM Fans have minds of their own!

So, don't where to start with this. I have 8 PWM fans connected to a Swiftech 8 way PWM splitter. The splitter is connected to the 4pin chassis fan header on my motherboard (AsRock z77 Extreme4). I also have a PWM D5 pump from EK which is connected on it's own to the 4pin CPU fan header on the mobo.

I can control the fans and the pump separately through BIOS. I have it set to automatic mode so that the fans run at around 850rpm unless the CPU goes over 65°C, which it does not. It's overclocked to 4.8ghz at 1.303v and earlier, four hours of Prime resulted in temps of high 50's to early 60's. Everything stays cool and quiet.

So far, so good.

The problem starts when I start using the GPUs, (two Asus R9 290 DCII). Running either Furmark, Heaven or just gaming, all BIOS settings seem to be forgotten and the fans slowly start to ramp up to 100%, ~ 1500rpm. Or at least I presume it's up to 1500rpm as the HWMonitor or HWInfo stop reporting the rpms once I'm full screen in a programme, ie, they continue to report ~ 850 rpm even though the fans are spinning up full speed.

The cards do produce a lot of heat, even at stock clocks, but the loop is able to keep their temps in the 50's. However the extra heat gets the CPU up to ~70°C.

Now I have tried SpeedFan and everything works well as above until I start using the GPU's and the problem is the same. To test it I have set the CPU target temps to 80°C and fixed the fan speed at 1100 rpm in BOIS. Again, as soon as I enter full screen mode and both GPUs kick in, that fans start to do their own thing regardless of what I set.

I've updated to the 15.3 beta drivers. I've been messing around with SpeedFan all afternoon as well as playing with the settings in BIOS, and even swapping the PWM headers that pump and fans are connected to.

Any ideas?

CPU_FAN_1 is the pump. It's set currently set to "Full On" which gives me ~3500RPM on the pump. Can't hear it so I leave it like this.

CHA_FAN_1 is connected to the Swiftech 8 way PWM splitter which have the 8 fans connected to it. It is set as follows;

Automatic Mode
Target CPU Temp = 65°C
Target Fan Speed = Level 1 (about 600rpm)

Yes but the temps are not exceeding the temps I have set in BIOS upon which the fans are to increase. BIOS is set to ramp up the fans once the cores exceed 65°C. All works as it should when it's just the CPU that's being stressed, however the fan speeds start to rise a lot earlier, around the early 50's, when the GPUs are being stressed also, be it with Furmark or Heaven, or just in game.

Unfortunately my MOBO only allows me to go up to 65°C as a target temp. I just tried setting it to manual mode and fixing the fans at level 1 regardless of CPU temps. There is another setting called "Over Temperature Protection" but I switched that off yesterday to see what would happen. No change. It is still off now.

With the fans fixed at 600rpm and "Over Temperature Protection" switched off, I ran Prime95 and Furmark together. Once the CPU hit high 70's they started to ramp up again. Max temp after 5 minutes were 80 - 78 - 78 - 80.

GPU temps were 51°C and 54°C.

With the stock DCII coolers I was getting 95°c (and thermal throttling) on the top card and high 80's on the bottom card so I thought getting max temps in the low 50's to be a result!

The amount of heat these cards put out is ridiculous tbh. The PC is like a radiator when it gets going. Ambient temps are around 20°c.

The loop consists of;

Ek xres 140 d5 pwm pump/res combo
Alphacool XT45 360mm push pull
Alphacool ST30 240mm push
Ek Supremacy on 3570k 4.8hhz 1.3v
Two Asus R9 290 with Ek FC full cover blocks

They have a pretty high TDP at stock, so I'm not surprised. You're asking your rads to dissipate almost, what, 650-700w of heat? You probably would benefit of something bigger than that ST30 240...they are pretty thin. I know- I chose it due to only being 30mm wide for my build.

This is from the Switech website;

"Product Description

The function of this device is to connect up to 8 PWM devices (fans and/or pumps) to a single PWM fan conector on the motherboard, thus enabling speed-control of all connected PWM devices concurrently.

We generally recommend to use the “CPU_Fan” connector of the motherboard,because most motherboard manufacturers usually allow a greater range of adjustments on this particular connector. PWM capable connectors must necessarily be 4-pin, but not all 4-pin motherboard connectors implement or enable the PWM signal modulation by default. Please carefully consult your motherboard documentation in this respect."

It might sound obvious but worth asking, have you tried connecting them the opposite way round with the splitter on the CPU header as it says?
Especially as you said you don't mind the pump running at full and that seems to be doing what you tell it too, you can always leave the pump at full on the other header.

Yes even set to automatic mode. I fixed the fan speed at 600rpm and launched prime and Furmark. Fan speed stayed low until temps hit high 70's to 80°c where they ramped up again regardless of my settings.
