i recently bought a pc to game on but found the description to what i actually bought was nowhere near. i have the intel DQ965GF motherboard with intel pentium d 2.8ghz cpu and basic intel fan. my gaming card is the amd radeon 5450 and i only have 4x1gbram (ddr2) got a feeling i will need to get a new motherboard and upgrade to high specs in the future but for now what could i possibly use on my system to boost it up so im able to actually game at a good level. also what is compatible with my motherboard.

Solution
The 5450 is a low level card, not suitable for gaming.
You can install any pcie x16 graphics card that you want subject to your budget and a suitably strong psu.

I might suggest a GTX750ti without an overclock which should run on as little as 300w

That's a good suggestion IF, and ONLY IF the motherboard can handle that 105W CPU.

OP -> You need to check the "AA revision" of you motherboard. There were a whole range of boards produced under the "dq965gf" model number, they have differing quality of power delivery which determines the CPUs they can safely run. That's specified by the "AA revision" of the motherboard. It should be printed near the model number on the motherboard. Or you might be able to get it from the BIOS.

Once you have that AA revision, check the Intel CPU compability list here: http://processormatch.intel.com/Processors/CompatibleProcessors?componentName=dq965gf
to confirm that the CPU recommended by @WildCard999 lists your AA revision in it's supported list.

There is, for example, a D41676-305 revision of your dq965gf which will handle a Core2Duo, but not a Core2Quad.

Find the best processor you can for your motherboard revision.

Those Core2Duo/Quad processors aren't too bad. With something like a 750ti, you'd be able to have a decent entry level gaming experience.

Board Revision Note: A small bar-coded label, similar to the diagram shown below, can be found on the component side of the desktop board. The numbers following the letters "AA" can help identify the type and version of your desktop board. The AA contains a 6-digit main number, and a 3-digit dash number (the 3 numbers following the "-").

The statement "...or later" refers to the dash number of the AA (the three numbers following the "-"). If this number is greater than the number listed in the table, the board supports the associated processor(s).

AA Rev(s)

Intel Core 2 Extreme X6800 (HH80557PH0774M) SL9S5 CPU 1066/2.93 GHz LGA 775

The AA Rev numbers above list the X6800 as compatible. You can get this CPU for $50 on eBay.
