ATI Catalyst Control Center for Radeon Graphics Cards - How do you manage the fan? Manual or Auto?

I have a HD 7950 that I overclock through CCC. In the past, the auto fan speeds used to be very lax and let the card get way too hot. I usually keep the fan speed set to manual at about 40%. That tends to keep the card at 60C or below. Any faster than 40%, and it gets noticeably louder.

How are you all setting the fan on the ATI cards? Has CCC gotten any better with auto fan speeds? I would like to use auto, since I wouldn't mind it hitting 50-100% during gaming to really cool it, but like I said in the past it never cranked up fast enough to keep it at decent temps.

well I guess it depends on the card -its fan design- and cooler ? this 7850 oc'ed just on factory auto idles at 20% fan and it get up to 64c@ 33%
and I cant tell noise from one speed to the other

I had a 6850 not so good it took a lot more fan speed all around and ran hotter idle and stressed and noisier as it reved up

so I may come down to luck and card design on what you end up with

Thanks for the reply. I intentionally bought this particular 7950 due to the fact everyone reviewed it and said the heatsink/fans/cooling were really good. I guess the auto fan settings in CCC are still really conservative.

I could always manually bump the fan up I suppose. It's a shame I can't set profiles like I can with cpu fan/case fans in the bios.

I never really wanted to stack on more software. I've heard of this before, but how does it work? Does it replace CCC or just run in addition to it?

I really don't want to screw with CCC, since my OC is rock solid stable. I'd hate to use another app to overclock it and find I made the card unstable.

well that's what the deal is maybe the ione you got was chunked together during the last shift on Friday ??

that comes down to the luck part --- like that 6850 I got. all that was said about it as well, but I did not see with the one I got

long time ago I got 2 8800's for a sli -- running them as a single card one was better as far as oc'ing and cooling [the excate same matched card's from evga ] so I got lucky with one card not so with the sister card ???

some times that's the way the ball bounces
