GPU Temperature Throttling

Hello all,

I have a mid-ranged gaming computer that I use to play Battlefield and I'm finding I get a lot of fps drop and after running some tests, I've found that my gpu is down throttling itself during gameplay. I suspect it's due to heat from the cpu because when I run a stress test on my cpu it gets quite warm(80C) but nothing too crazy and when I run a stress test on the GPU it stays acceptably cool. I believe the problem is when I'm playing something like Battlefield that is moderately intensive on both the CPU and GPU that heat from the CPU is warming up my GPU too much to keep it throttled up. Does this sound right? And if so, do you all think that getting a water cooler like and h80i or h100i would better cool the CPU and lower my ambient temperatures in the case?

Fan setup is as follows:

Front-Lower Intake
Side Panel Exhaust
Upper-Rear Exhaust
GPU is facing down below the side panel(possible source of the issue?)
CPU cooler is blowing air slightly below upper-rear exhaust

My build is as follows:

Coolermaster HAF 912
Biostar TA970 Mobo
8GB DDR3 SDRAM
AMD FX-8320 @ 4.2GHz
Hyper 212 EVO CPU Cooler
EVGA nVidia GTX 760 SuperClocked w/ACX Cooler
1TB HDD
My Cable management is OK, but I've seen far better(first build, lol), and I clean the dust out fairly regularly with my shop vac.

Any help you all can offer is GREATLY appreciated...

Thank you,

Keith

What are your CPU and GPU temps in game?

80c is not how enough to throttle the GPU.

Your CPU could be throttling though if it is getting too hot. That motherboard is not very good for overclocking. so you could be overheating the VRMs or Northbridge. A water cooler will make this WORSE as it doe snot cool the motherboard at all where an air cooler does.

We need to know your load CPU temps.

CPU is 80-85c in game and GPU is 90 with occasional spikes to about 97.

I find it odd that the CPU runs about the same temperature during prime95 as Battlefield..

Also I didn't know that mobos could affect performance... I was under the impression it was just certain features and slots and of course bios software...

Yep, the CPU is too hot. It is throttling and killing your performance.

You need to keep it under 70 MAX. Preferably under 65.

Is the cooler properly installed? Did you use the thermal paste correctly?

Remove your overclock.

Motherboard's do not affect performance of the computer. But they DO affect how much and how stable your overclock can be. A lower end board will not overclock as well as a proper board.

Do you think 3.5GHz that's standard on my CPU is enough for what I play? I usually run-medium to high settings and even with this issue it's playable @ 60fps just with occasional dips to about 35-40...

I at some point was planning on upgrading the mobo anyways to accommodate a second 760 to keep this build going somewhat competitive. What do you recommend getting so I can do that and keep that aging 8320 competitive? :p

As for the CPU cooler... Believe it is install correctly.. Watched a few videos on how to and re did it a few times to make sure it was right.

I applied a small dab to the center and used a small piece of paper to spread it out as evenly as possible.

The cooler then just latched onto the stock bracket.

The only reason I oc'd it that much was because I thought if the 8350 was stock @4.0ghz then 8320 would in theory handle at least that with no issue seeing as it's the same chip. Maybe there's some difference other then the actual circuity?

Okay I opened her up and found what I believe is a HUGE mistake... had the top rear exhaust fan mis-oriented and blowing air in DIRECTLY into the fan on the CPU cooler. You think this was the issue? I'm still going to redo the Thermal paste, and I'm in the process of tweaking the OC... but it's already 20C lower(60C) under load with prime95....

UPDATE:

Haven't done the paste yet, starting to think it'll be unnecessary because I've got this thing stable @ 4.0GHz(1.4V) prime 95 temp was maxed at 65, during gameplay, maxed at 55C. GPU is running way cooler now too... peaked at 68C.

I can actually play BF:HL at Ultra 1920x1080 @ 60 FPS now! Thank you!

So I have an fx-6300 and I am throtteling like HELL dips from 80 to 10 fps. The cpu tems are: 60~ and the gpu 75-80~.
When I have the panel off my pc it doesnt throttle. The videocard is an gtx 750 ti from asus (twin frozer).
