It might bottleneck it a little bit, but I'd be more worried about your PSU having enough power for the R9 280X.
If your PSU has low wattage, go with a 750 Ti. It has a low power consumption.

The GTX 750 Ti and r7 260x are only very slightly faster than the 6870, don't waste your money on an "upgrade" to one of these.

The GTX 750 Ti being the faster of the three and only about 10-20% better in games - hardly worth the upgrade cost.

Upgrade to a gtx960/r9 280, or higher performing card to get a noticable difference. Gtx 960 if you are Nvidia Biased, or have low wattage psu. R9 280 for slightly more potential performance than a gtx 960, but does draw more power.

Don't go with a GTX 960, bad GPU. It is the same price as the R9 280, and the R9 280 destroys it.

Keep in mind that the GTX 960 is brand new and is a 128 bit GPU, which means it can't even utilize more than 1GB of its VRAM.

Though I do agree it is an overpriced pos. It does however perform in the same league as r9 280 (actually beating it in some games), despite the 128bit limit, and it definitely can use all of its 2gb vram effectively.

A rebuild isn't totally necessary, your cpu is still ok. Maybe just get an r9 280 for now, you can find them for under £140 and it should be a decent upgrade for you :)

Depends on the quality (Brand) of your psu

But yes you should definitely oc that cpu! It was built for it!
4gb version gtx 960? it is not worth it, unless you are wanting to sli

I personally would get a r9 280/280x/290 over the gtx 960,
only time ill start considering Nvidia is gtx 970/980 range (even then id probably pick 290x just for the price), or if I have crap psu, and dont want my system failing in a year from too much power draw
