I want to install windows 8.1 on a 5400rpm harddrive on a system with only 4gb of ram.

The laptop in question, when using 5400, was extremely slow, programs would hang and crash, it was terrible.

I installed an SSD and all of those problems went away, so I'm assuming that it's tied to having a slow * harddrive.

Right now I can't afford an SSD, so I'm wondering what I can do within windows to make it more lightweight in general, and only retrieve stuff from the harddrive when absolutely required.

Is this possible?

I have Win 7 and Win 10 dualbooting on a 6 year old L305 Toshiba laptop.
2.2Ghz Celeron, 2GB RAM, 5400RPM 250GB drive.

Previously, it was Win 7 & Win 8/8.1.

Slow, yes. Disturbingly slow and crashing? No.

All i know is that the issue went away with an SSD which leads me to thinking it was the 5400rpm drive.
