GTA V : FPS drop (GTX 770)

Hi,

After I run GTA V, on first sight it runs very smooth, 60 FPS. But after a while you get into a game (combat, car, plane crashes etc.) huge FPS drop happens, even to 15 FPS then afterwards it gets back to normal 60FPS. The FPS drop and sometimes lag are very annoying. I didn't touch any of the graphics settings, most of them are on high - very high.

I have the latest nvidia driver installed.

PC setup:

AsRock Extreme 4
Core i5 4670k
8GB RAM
MSI GTX 770 twin frozr 2GB
320GB HDD
Windows 8.1 PRO

Thank you in advanced!

P.S. My brother uses R9 280X 3GB and a lower grade intel cpu, and yet he doesn't have the problems I do at all.

it shows that when you're sitting in a non-laggy position. Try going to one of those problematic scenes where you experience the FPS drop, and check memory usage again.

On my GTA V with the settings cranked up I'm sitting at over 4700MB used

sidenote: with SLI 970s, GTA V detects that I have ~8GB VRAM, I wonder if that's an error

Texture quality is on normal and msaa is off from the beggining, still fps drop occurs... even to 7 fps on fast driving. Those things which were on very high I lowered them to high. I've tryed lowering everything to normal but vram isn't much different (1300/2047). It would be wierd if this card couldn't run this game even on low settings without problems. But r9 280x, which was like £50 cheaper, runs it perfectly with high - very high settings. I feel like my hands are completely tied. I think I regret not buying amd now.

116GB is free. I didn't defragment it. I'll do it this night.

I've read here (LINK) that other nvidia drivers might be the cause for fps drop. I'll uninstall everything from geforce experience to the audio and 3D related drivers. Only leaving out the driver and physx. I'll try to see if it works tomorow afternoon and get back to you.

Yes, that is a good idea. I'll uninstall all of the nvidia drivers and then do a clean installation. Thanks for the advice.

After deleting all of the nvidia drivers and performing a clean installation of those I need got me a decent fps. I still get fps drop but only when action is very loaded. And the fps doesn't drop below 30. So I'll call this a success! Thanks :)

I've defragmented HDD as well.

I have the exact same graphics card and processor. The only major difference in our rigs is mines on a SSD and i have 16gb ram. I was having the exact same problem and i have most things on high or very high. All i did was turn the distance scaling from full to half and my fps now stay between 60 and 90. its pretty stable on 90 and only dips in extremely intense situations

This happened to me and my friends as well and I have a GTX 980 and he 970. The problem is that you are using Windows 8.1. We both are currently on windows 10 beta. I have had to reinstall the Nvida drivers twice this far cus this just doesn't affect the FPS i'm getting in GTA V but all games.

That's not the problem. my friend is using windows 8.1 and he doesn't have this problem.

Why would you pay GTA V on windows 10 beta anyway? The windows isn't out yet and is still pretty unstable compared to windows 8

I'll do the same, since I still get occasional fps drops... thanks

FINAL SOLUTION:

Well guys I finaly got rid of massive lag and now I can play smoothly at 60FPS! Nvidia GTX770 2GB nor it's drivers were the problem. I overclocked my CPU from 3.4GHZ to 4.2GHZ, its stable. I've seen that open world games depend more on CPU than GPU.

I was really sceptical of overclocking CPU. But if your CPU has a "k" in its name and you have an aftermarket CPU cooler I'd say go for it and OC it to a stable setting. It was very easy, program which you can find on your motherboard site, in my case A-Tuning, has done the job for me.

Best wishes to all,

Armin

Hey guys,

Found out the problem, the fps drops because of unstable clocking,
Check out the program called throttle stop
throttle stop controls your clocking, the more stable the clocking the better the fps.
Works out for me, been playing without any fps drop for 3 days.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6h5RXDOIMS4
Check out this video on how to use throttle stop
Sorry about the quality but it the most useful one i could find.

I had this problem. One day i'm playing at 60-90 fps the next it drops to 10-40. I was very confused to this as I could not remember changing settings. Your thread helped me work out the issue. The night before, I forgot that I changed my power settings in control panel to 'power saver'. That prevented my CPU from working at full voltage. Suffice to say, changed my power options back to 'performance' and my fps short up to its original count. Thanks!

Whenever I use Geforce Experience to optimize GTA V it acts like I have 3 Gigs if VRAM when I only have 2.

After this last update the game has become close to unplayable. Lags like h*ll every now and then. Turning v-sync on, off or to adaptive mode does jack sh*t...

I tried disabling SLI (970's) to no use, the overclock or throttling aint the problem either. When leaving my garage the cards work at between 25-50% and when entering ammunation and going to armor it drops to 0-10% for ~10 seconds. Guess we have to wait for Nvidia for the solution
