how to fix a recognized external hard drive that doesn't show up in "my computer"?

I have an external HDD (Apacer - 1 terabyte) and it fell at a height of more than a foot. Since then I only hear the sound of the usb connection and I have the option to safely remove it from the external devices. Does this mean that it is recognized? even it doesn't show up in "my computer". How could I fix this problem? please help..

A fall from that height has damaged the drive. The only "fix" is to replace the drive, there's nothing user repairable there.

Hi there letlorenz,

The fact that it appears in Device Manager and that you have the option for safe ejection could mean that the connection may be fine. Though, my guess would be that the HDD itself(not the enclosure) sustained some damage. I doubt that you will be able to access it with some software tools(testing or data recovery ones). It will not hurt to try though.
It case you want to retrieve the data that is stored on the drive, I would suggest you to contact a data recovery company.

Just out of interest, does the disk appear in Disk Management under the MMC? I've had similar problems and a re-initialisation fixed it.

Even if that worked, I would still look at replacing the drive anyway, unless it only held unimportant data.
