Hi,

I recently purchased a Portable 1TB Toshiba USB HD. It works ok on my laptop, but does not work on my desktop pc. However, other external HD's work on my desktop pc.

When I take this Portable 1TB Toshiba USB HD to another desk top it works. So I'm left confused. It does not display on my desktop pc in the list of disc drives. However, when I go to the Boot Menu in the BIOS it is shown there. So, all I can suspect is there is something wrong in my Windows 7. Any Suggestions?

It may just need a drive letter manually assigning to it, sometimes Windows fails to assign one automatically to an external hard drive.
See this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/change-add-remove-drive-letter#1TC=windows-7

Follow instructions to "Add" a drive letter.

I have to do that whenever I plug my external backup drive in to my wife's laptop, but on my PC it's not necessary.
Just one of Windows' inconsistent quirks.

-Go to device manager, and see if there any missing or driver errors.

-Is your laptop a MAC or linux computer? Windows recognizes Fat, Fat32 and NTFS file formats. Does not recognize MAC and linux file formats.

-Also try to connect the USB HDD with another USB port. Sometimes front panel USB does not supply enough power for external HDD to function.

-Try to connect another USB storage device with the desktop computer and see what happens.
