I have a 1TB WD My Passport. I had shrinked a 20G space on it and it was fine. Then I wanted to create a recovery drive from windows 8.1 in my Dell laptop. In the middle of the process it gave an error and stopped. Now I see that it shows 32 GB. I don't know where are the next that included my information. Please help me. Have I lost all data?

Hi there helprequest,

That is unpleasant. :( Though, you should be able to recover some data in case the data is not overwritten.
You can use some partition recovery software tool in order to retrieve the data. Check this thread out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/298544-32-accidentally-turned-external-hard-drive-recovery-disk
After you recover the data(or at least some of it), go to Disk Management and reformat the drive.

I guess it will not hurt to test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool after that: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=CN5fev

Let me know how it goes,
D_Know_WD :)

Thanks for your comments. I am trying to find an external Hard, then install a Partition Recovery software and see if I can recover my Data. But I am not sure if it is safe to try different software. I mean if I use one software and it does not recover them, does it also reduces the probability for later recoveries by other software?

Thanks for the links. Today I run a scan with iCare and at the end it showed a lot of folders categorized based on file types. I should check others to see if they can restore the file trees and the names.

On my Hard Drive I had a folder which contained the data recovered from a damaged laptop, by a company. Today I used EaseUs software to scan my Hard drive and what I see is that it can recognize all the folders other than the one I mentioned above (data recovered from Laptop). What I see, is the list of strange folders , which I guess are the contents of that recovered folder. I don't know if the company that had recovered my laptop's data onto this hard drive, had encrypted it or what. I will ask them on Monday; but in case you have any thought on this, please let me know.

Thanks.

If you go into Disk management and right click on the 32gb partition, and then click extend. That should leave you with your drive being a full 1gb again. I had just solved this same problem with my drive. Unfortunately I can't help you with the data because I had a backup.
