Hey, I have a Dell optiplex 960 with a dual core E8400 Intel CPU in it. I'm looking to put a quad core in for intensive game purposes. Will any CPU work that is for 775? What's the best quad core CPU I can get for under $100 on eBay? I've been looking on there and I'm not sure which one would be best for me. If it helps any, it would need to be able to handle Total War Rome 2 on high settings because my current CPU falls well short of that.

Thanks guys.

Check the motherboard's manual if you can find it or look for the highest-spec CPU in that Optiplex line to see what the highest-performance CPU for it might be.

If you are really serious about the "intensive" part of your question though, you should really consider upgrading to an i5 since the Core iX series are nearly twice as fast per core in large part thanks to their integrated memory controller and single-threaded performance is still the main limiting factor in most games and applications.

[strike]As I recall (used to use one of these and did upgrade to a 4-core CPU), the best you can use is a Q6600 or Q6700. [/strike]

I donated to the neighbor's kids 4 years ago and it is still running well.

EDITED: Original statement was not correct.

isn't the e8400 a 1333mhz FSB cpu?

[strike]It is, I went back and looked at that and edited my post (see above). I could be wrong here, but I do recall an issue using the faster CPU when I completed such an upgrade a few years ago.[/strike]

EDIT: This is not correct. See below.
