so im in the market for a mid end card , currently my options are just these 2 :

msi gtx 960 for $205 ( new with witcher 3 code)

gigabyte gtx 770 for $150.( friend wanting to upgrade to a gtx 970 , so he's selling his 770 to me for $150 . used for about a year. no issues from what i have observed)

do you guys think getting a used card is worth it?or should i just get the 960?

Solution
The only real new feature exclusive to the Maxwell is MFAA, which is a new Anti Aliasing technology. Basically it offers similar image quality to 4x MSAA while exacting a performance hit similar to 2x MSAA, at least on games that support it. Whether it's worth shelling out the extra cash for it is up to you.
The 770 is slightly faster than the 960 in most titles, but it does use a lot more power, if you have a weak PSU (anything 500 Watts or less) I would not recommend it. The 960 is much more power efficient and has support for Nvidia's MFAA technology, which isn't available on the older Kepler cards, and you do get the Witcher 3 code if you are interested in that game.

If you have a PSU that can handle it, want to save some money and have little interest in playing Witcher 3, then the 770 might be a good deal for you.

i have a EVGA nex750b which im sure is enough and witcher 3 is something i plan to play ,but i already have a separate code . my main concern is the gtx 770 being used and a bit older technology vs a gtx 960's new features. are the new stuff on the gtx 960 worth the buy?

i see. so with this extra feature , will it be able to perform better than a 770 with 4x MSAA ? or will 770 STILL perform better ? ( sorry for too many questions , employees from where im buying the GPU at are clueless and looking at me like im some crazy person when i try to ask them about PC stuff)

MFAA will help performance on games that have MSAA as an option. If the game doesn't support MSAA, it's not going to help, and it also doesn't work with DirectX 9 games.

It might help you on somewhat older or less demanding titles, but for the latest games you're probably not going to be able to turn MSAA on at all without either sacrificing 60FPS, or reducing some other graphical settings. A lot of the new games need a GTX 970 or equivalent to really consider turning up the AA without making sacrifices to other quality settings or framerate.

MSAA is somewhat falling out of favour these days because it doesn't smooth out transparent textures, and doesn't tend to work all that great when mixed with some current post processing techniques. It's why stuff like SMAA, TXAA or downsampling are becoming more popular.

Sure, if you want to save go to the GTX 770. Just remember 280x has 3GB ram and XFX offfers a lifetime warranty. I don't think your friend can beat that lol. If I didnt have 200 to spend i would buy the 770. It is a deal for 150.
