I'm getting a new PC(Dell XPS) next week. I want to change the OEM harddrive prior to turning it on. (I know to check BIOS once swapped) - then I plan on booting from CD and installing Linux on my HD - I'll put the original hard drive away till I want to switch back to Windows. Am I asking for problems - anything to lookout for?

No, as long as the HDD is different there shouldn't really be any hiccups.
It's also quite possible that could dual boot and have both hard drives in there and everytime it starts up you can decide which OS you want to use.
Google how to dual boot windows and linux.
