Hi,

I am the owner of an MSI GS70 Stealth Pro which is a laptop with i7-4710HQ. I was thinking about switching to the iMac 5K but they want me to choose between i5-4690 which is 3.5GHz Turbo 3.9Ghz or an i7 (extra of 320$ if I remember good).

Would it be worth the 320$?
How will the i5 perform against my laptop i7 which is powerful enough for me.

Thanks

The thing about laptops is that to be able to run at their highest clock speeds, etc you can't use the battery life but will need the charger plugged in to reach a 'gaming' laptops maximum performance, else you can damage the battery, though personally I just remove it and always play with the charger. Laptops have very limited airflow with very small fans which is also a huge factor. Regardless of all this, your i7 is better then a i5-4690, much better. I personally will never recommend a Mac for anything to be completely honest with you.

What is your budget and what will you be doing with your PC?

Hi,

I am trying to understand why the i7-4710HQ would be much more powerful even if this one is clocked at 2.5GHz Turbo 3.5GHz against the i5-4690 3.5GHz Turbo 3.9GHz.

I know the i7 supports hyperthreading and can increase up to 30% performance, but how does in real life is it really effective? Are there really many applications optimized for that?

Most of the time I am programming Java and C++. This means I would need a virtual machine to boot up Windows and test my software on this platform aswell.

Thanks you

Photo editing, video editing, rendering in general are all multi threaded 'friendly' if I may use that word in this context. Games are starting to get multi threaded too but not at the same rate, hence why the i5 (without HT) is the best bang for buck CPU currently for gaming. To answer your question regarding why the i7 is faster than the i5 has to do with the architecture and a numerous of other things, which is why simply looking at core speed isn't accurate. Because of this, people tend to use tools to benchmark their hardware and post it online which consumers like you and me then look at to determine 'how much better' CPU A is than CPU B.

Thanks for all of your replies !

It looks like some people are throttling up to 105 degrees which is a lot. Happily I am not playing games so I am not feeling concern about it.

Does someone know if I will really feel the difference between my mobile i7 and that desktop i5 in every day use for developement. I am not video editing or using really photoshop.

PS: The order was proceed few days ago already, sadly can't go back on my decision for the CPU anyway but it is upgradeable :) I have selected the 500GB SSD.

Thanks you
