Hey guys, Ive run into this issue multiple times while playing gta V. The game crashes quite often. Sometimes 20 minutes into playing, and sometimes 2 hours into playing. I get this error upon crash saying something like: Error, try to reboot or restart the game. Re-install if this message comes up again. I reinstalled the game, and my drivers, but this still keeps happening.
System Specs:
Gtx 980
i5 4670
8GB
It also says kernel gpu has stopped working (or something like that)
Im using the latest driver 350.12
Ive also noticed that disabling Nvidia TXAA in-game makes it work for longer. (could just be a coincidence.)
Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

Sounds the the drivers for the gpu are not working correctly. Try returning the gpu clock speeds back to factory settings and if that doesn't work try the previous drivers. Also if the error is displayed then write it down or take a screen shot and post it so we can get a better idea of the kernel error. Is this the only game that it crashes on or does this affect any other game?

Lowering the settings did help, (made supersampling from 16x to 8x, and disabled nvidia TXAA), and that made it crash later than it usually does. Ill try to go even lower.

Hi, I have kind of same crash, it happening after few hours of playing. I guess its because the game add up RAM use over time maybe.
Last check when it crash for me it was using around 2.6 GB RAM. I will try to check tonight by the begining of the session and check every 30 minut of playing to see if its really that.

My specs :
GTX 970 asus strix
I7 4790K
8GB
SSD 250 crucial

I agree if you lower you setting it last longer .
Is it possible to limit FPS to 60? (maybe its when fps are too high that cause game to crash?)

Hello,

This means that the Graphics Driver is crashing. I'd recommend checking your GPU in a piece of software such as FurMark to see if it crashes. Try re-installing your graphics driver.

I already Reinstalled my gpu driver. Either there is an error in the games programming (most likely)
Or the newest Nvidia driver.
I think playing for an hour and then closing the game, and restarting helps, if it really does eat up more RAM as you play

I've noted my result for my yesterday evening session.

My games crashed after 30minuts the 1st time. From 1.7GB Ram to 2.7GB at the crash.

Then after one hour playing from 1.7GB to 3GB

I've noticed it's more stable and last longer when you limit fps to 60. (it doesnt crashed during almost 2 hour for me). And I've noticed that the more you use ram, the more you have a chance to crash.

The Most GBRAM used i achieve is 3.2/3.3 GB

In my opinion I really think there a problem with the game itself, I know tha GTA V use a lot of ressources but i think i should be able to play without lag at my configuration (970, i7, 8GB), more over with the 60 fps limit ( I achieve 70 to 95 without limit, Ultra/HiGH AA16 and TXAA)

me too i belive is a game optimization problem and you should be expecting a driver fix or update. since lowering your settings helps a bit but thats noit the solution. you cant just have such a hardware not being able to use it on maximum or right. if it wasnt powerfull enought to handle it then it would strungle to get you 60 fps or give lower like 45 for example. having 57-80 is more than needed to play so no hardware problem here. just software. the game or the driver is withdrawing your gpu power resourches in wrong way. It looks like memory leak or something.

I've actually had similar problems in multiple games that can be resource intensive. I think it's either a flaw in the hardware or software that they haven't found yet. Warframe is another game that'll crash pretty often like GTA V. I suggest checking it out to see if that's true on yours as well. I've heard some comments that the clock speed on the GTX 980 is too high and have even been suggested to underclock it because of that. I have yet to try this possible fix for obvious reasons (Why buy the 980 if you're going to lower its performance), and I prefer to run my games as best as I can until the eventual crash I get.

Edit: Yes lowering settings on both games does reduce the amount of time to crashing, but I've had crashes in both games no matter what I do. It's always a matter of time.

I have an update, since the last patch of around 200MB I have almost no crashes.
From my last session yesterday evening, I have crashed only once after 20min. But then from 8pm to 1 am no crashes. I played with 60 fps limit, i think it can help. Or maybe they have fixed it with the patch.
The more RAM use I achieve to get after some hours of play is around 3.2GB 3.3GB.
I have even take the liberty of raise a little the graphics since i limit my fps to 60 and my GPU use only 75% of his limit (970 strix OC). (i'm on FXAA *16, ultra and High for some)

However I still think it can do no wrong to quit and launch again the game after 3/4 hours of playing, especially if you have the game on an SSD.

How can i limiti my FPS to 60 or 40? Is it a game option or with nvidia settings?

Enable V-Sync in GTA V options menu to limit the FPS to 60.

Ok thank you, I have limit my FPS to 30. It seems that i could play a little bit longer but the issue is the same: crash.
Its annoying !
Do someone has a solution? Or do we have to wait for an uptade?

Seems like any pc crashes are game (software) related. Once they patch the memory allocation issue which seems to be the reason ppl are crashing/poor performance then everything should run much better. Hopefully it will be out soon, keep an eye out on Rockstars website for updates.
