Need some advice about building a new rig or upgrading

Hey everyone!

My current system...
ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
Intel Core i7-2600K
4 sticks of G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600
GTX 580

My entire PC is dedicated to gaming and gaming alone. I am currently waiting for the Acer XB270HU to come available to purchase. Obviously my GTX 580 is very outdated and needs to be upgraded to make the monitor worthwhile. I am considering just upgrading the video card to a GTX 980 and calling it a day...however, this leads me to my question.

How future proof is my rig? Can I push the system a little more or should I just build myself something new? As I said I only game and very much enjoy the pretty graphics lol.

Secondly, I have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus for my i7. My temps have been running around 50-63 degrees Celsius while gaming. My room has poor ventilation and I am curious if there are any alternatives to cooling off my processor more efficiently without replacing it? (Not looking for water cooling)

Just to recap...
1) Is upgrading my current system to a GTX 980 going to be worthwhile for me? or should I just get a new $2000 rig?
2) Any way I can cool my processor better then my Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus?

I appreciate all of the feedback in advance! :)

980 and 970 is fine...however it is mid april. The x390 is coming...VERY soon and it will be priced VERY aggressively

We are not talking about the viscous circle of waiting for better and better parts. We are talking about a man/girl (You) who has a GREAT long serving system and has to only wait a short while for the newer solution driving DOWN prices of what he wants to buy today...

literally...even if you go 970/980 non ti...wait at least a couple more weeks till they get LOTS cheaper...we are talking minimum...

Your rig is till very good and only recently slipped off the best possible performance by a cpu in gaming perch (before severely diminishing returns).

The card is a little old, nothing tragic though. I have a friend who games most titles on a 570, a lesser card and it is fine for now.

You are on that cusp where, if you show patience and hold out till skylake you can get much much better parts and build a really good, longer lasting rig.

I would hold off on the GPU too and wait for the x390 and then nvidias answer which will beat it into the ground (980 ti probably)

I say this as your system really is totally ok allround, at least for this year, imo.

Also your cooling is fine and there is almost no point trying to better cool it to OC is a bit more.

With the 980 it will be very future proof for gaming.

Good cable management increases airflow and thus cools components more effectively. A better air cooler that i'd suggest is the noctua NH d14... VERY good cpu air cooler!

1) Yes, this CPU is still a monster and you can get any card you want, provided your PSU is up to the task. No need to upgrade the rig besides that; you will get a massive performance boost in games. But 980 is overpriced IMO, especially for 1080p gaming - you might as well get 970 and call it a day, no reason to go higher.

2) With the temps you are getting, there is no reason to ho higher than CM 212 Plus - your temps are great, this CPU can go way higher than this without being throttled.

Just a thought

I agree with the others. The nVidia 970 is probably the best card for 1080p gaming. If you wanted 1440p or higher I'd wait and see what AMD brings to the table. The AMD 3xx series of cards should be out very soon. AMD releases their earnings today so we may hear more news related to the 300 series of cards as early as today.

+1

An SSD brings dramatically lower boot times, better read and write in general, vastly improved loading times in data heavy games (bf4, gta 5, cod, any 4x game etc etc)

It is recommended you get a 250gb or more (if you can afford it) to put on the OS and all system critical and boot apps, leaving room for 1,2 or 3 big modern titles.

Supplement with a 1TB HDD or bigger for other games, game captures, files like music and movies which do not benefit from the ssd.

Yes. you can use samsung magician with a samsung ssd to optimize the speed and use.

Soon, windows 10 will be a FREE upgrade to all 7 and 8 users. This is late summer probably.

So yeah, stick to it for now and get a free new good OS then.

It is free software, compatible with most SSD drives from Samsung.

Essentially it will check ur SSD, make sure it is genuine (which it will be lol). Then you can run a benchmark on it where it testsq speed and performance and health of the drive.

Upon which it will give you the option to optimiseq some settings for the OS to work in harmony with the drive.

After all that optimising and enhacing (automatic) you will be shown another benchmark and how much improvment there has been in read write and random read write too.

In my case, i have a lot of spare ram and it drove the performance of random read write up by 10x!!!!! from 520 mb/sec to 5200 roughly lol

It discovered spare RAM and set up essentially a cache (ramdisk style solution) where temp data is stored for ultra fast access and which is wiped after every restart.

An amazing little programm and the reason any premium is worth paying for samsung ssds

Can't thank you enough for all the help! I am drooling at your build, but I guess I'll just stick with my current rig and upgrade my GPU. When should I consider overclocking or is it even necessary?

It is seldom required. It's more a hobby and an optimization.

You buy a decently fast car like a Subaru Impreza or a BMW 135i for example, overclocking would be to remap the ECU and make sure it runs more efficiently and gives you more power where you need it, giving a smoother drive and less consumption.

Most don't do it, those that do, reap the benefits...more fps in the case of a PC.

I would probably read into the subject, make sure you understand the process of it taking time and small steps to perform (set aside a day or something like 8 hours to tune, stress test, tune, stress test etc.)

Not a problem at all. Ram makes very little difference at the moment.

you have plenty and it will do the job perfectly. You need to consider how much to use. For aggressive overclocks, it is sometimes better to apply 8 GB.

In future, you can use the full 16 and couple with a samsung ssd to get the ramdisc effect thanks to magician
