First off, i live in Australia where our internet speed is average to say the least, but after running a speedtest on my laptop and desktop, I've found that my laptop was at 9mbps and my desktop at 5-6mbps. i was under the understanding that a wired connection was faster or at the very least should not be this much slower(over 30% slower). i have a generic router that my isp provided with if that helps

Solution
Try plugging the wired connection into a different port on the router to see if the current one i just not working properly. Or if you have a switch between the computer and router, temporarily eliminate it. Or just try a different Ethernet cable.

Try hooking up your laptop with the wire and test the connection. You should receive the same 9mbps.
It may be a case of outdated drivers on your desktop holding it back, try updating to the latest.

Hey, how did you fix the problem?

I just got new speed internet and when I connect my computer using ethernet it's signifiantly slower than wireless on the same laptop.

On my other laptop the wired produces very fast results (faster than wifi) so the problem is my laptopr's ethernet connection.

what can i do?

My ISP provider came with his working laptop, pluging in my ethernet cable in his laptop and the internet speed it was 300mb/s.
and on my laptop is 17 mb/s....

Allinox . I just did what Pooneil suggested and changed which port the Ethernet was plugged into on my router. I assume something was wrong with the port.I'm not sure if it will help you but it seemed to fix my issue.
