Hey guys,

So to sum things up quickly, I'm having a bit of a problem with my system. I got home from work to find my computer in sleep mode. Pretty normal stuff. So I hit my power button and the computer turns on. However, I notice a small problem: The fans are much louder than usual. This confuses me, so I check my temps and the GPU is only at 25 degrees C and my CPU only at about 40 degrees C. I decide to shut down my computer and turn it back on just to see if that changes anything.

Upon shut down, I let it sit for a moment and then turn it back on. Now I don't get a display. I was stumped until I noticed a bright red light coming from my PC. I looked down to see the source. I checked my manual and the particular light thats lit up is the VGA LED. What does this mean, exactly? My card displayed fine right before shut down. What could have happened between then and now?

Any information is appreciated. Thank you.

Solution
Okay, I've done some troubleshooting and I have my solution.

I tried putting the card back in the same slot, a different slot, nothing. Still a VGA light.

So I wasn't sure, but to be sure it was the GPU, I grabbed my GTX 560 from my previous build and stuck it in there, replacing the 970. I got it all set up and got my display, no VGA light at all. The computer booted fine all the way up to the login screen. Its not the motherboard, its not the hardrive, its not the CPU. Its most definitely my GPU. It died for some reason, I have no clue why.

So whats the next step?

I have an MSI GTX 970. I didn't buy a warrant though. Do they have a replacement policy for cards without warranty?

Take the GPU out and see if it will run from the CPU's video output. That will at least tell you the motherboard is working.

GPU's can die, but before you abandon all hope:

1) Try plugging the GPU back in (Sometimes enough temperature cycles can shift them and cause poor contact in the slot)
2) Make sure the power plugs are firmly seated

Test the GPU in another computer if available. If it doesn't work, probably going to have to start an RMA.

More difficult troubleshooting:
1) Loosen motherboard standoff screws, re-insert GPU and make sure it is aligned well with the slot, re-tighten motherboard screws (helps solve video card sag issues)
2) Check actual power supply voltage using multimeter, if questionable, try another power supply if available.
