Everything is in the title, would be used with an MSI mobo and 4690K i5.

It would be running with corsair's 750 w power supply.
I've heard the Nvidia uses less power and is substantialy better then the 290 even al par with the 290x.

Is that true?

Thanks in advance

The performance difference is not overwhelming, though it would be accurate to say the the GTX 970 performs a bit better than the 290. The 970 and the 290X are about equal in performance.

However, thanks to the Maxwell architecture, the GTX 970 runs cooler and uses less power. The 290X has also been known to run hotter than most video cards.

Sorry for the late reply.

Yes, I would recommend a 970 over an R9 290. Better performance and less power draw. A little more expensive, but worth the extra cost.

I'm not very good at comparing cards within the same chipset. As such, I can't provide a good argument for getting one 970 over the other. That one itself is very nice, being a factory OC'd card-- the free copy of The Witcher 3 is attractive as well.

If you want a recommendation for a different 970, please consult a graphics card expert.

I think the GTX 970 would be the right card for you, however, do not buy that version. The cooler on is very bad, so I would recommend getting the fully-fledged MSI Gaming 4G version of the GTX 970 with a much better cooler for a couple of bucks more. The Gigabyte Gaming G1 is also a good option if it is priced around the same as the MSI Gaming version, and the EVGA GTX 970 FTW+ is great too, but usually substantially for expensive then the first two. Here's a link to the MSI Gaming, it's 319.99 after rebate, which is an awesome deal if you ask me: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127832&cm_re=msi_gtx_970-_-14-127-832-_-Product
