EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0 Stuttering in Some Games

I just bought and installed a GTX 980 and I have been testing some games with it. I've been having stuttering issues with some games like Ryse: Son of Rome, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and GTA V. Before the 980 I had a GTX 770 4GB and I didn't have trouble with games stuttering but now I do.

Ryse is the worst of all, it stutters pretty badly to the point where I don't even want to play it because the screen is such a mess. It's not all the time but in occasional areas of the game it stutters badly. I checked the frame rate count with Ryse and the other games and I'm getting high fps ( 60 and above) it's just really inconsistent. Dragon Age and GTA V stutter some as well but not nearly as much. I didn't haven't trouble with those games with my 770.

I've tried all different kinds of fixes but nothing has worked so far. Not all games stutter, Rome II and Shadow of Mordor ran smoothly. Is there a way to fix this issue?

Here's my system specs:

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
CPU: i5-4690k
MOBO: ASRock Z97 Extreme3
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Superclocked ACX 2.0
RAM: Corsair Vengeance Blue 8GB 1600 MHz
PSU: Thermaltake TR2 600W

theres a few threads at evga forum on that

funny why is it when these 900 cards have a issue its always - turn this off cap the frames bla bla bla limit it in some way ''

is this why you bought a performance card to do them things like cutting stuff back ?? for 350 and 550 bucks it should be all turn it up and kick a$$ ????

I've tried running the games that stutter with v-sync or off and it doesn't help very much. I also tried the different v-sync options in the Nvidia Control panel and the adaptive v-sync helped smooth GTA V out but not completely. I don't have g-sync in my monitor so I can't use it. Although it does support g-sync but I'd have to purchase it separately and install it in my monitor. I'm going to keep testing different things for now and see if I can fix the stuttering. Hopefully in the meantime someone can come up with a solution for me.

I forgot to say that my monitor is an ASUS VG278HE 144 Hz, 2ms, 1920x1080p monitor. Even with this monitor there's still a lot of stuttering with some of my games.

That's exactly what I was thinking. I didn't pay $580 to turn down a bunch of settings and limit my frame rate with V-sync. I could have bought like two R9 290X's for the price I paid for my 980 lol.

Thanks for the link, I'll check it out. It's so weird how my 980 performs. I'll get a smooth 80 fps at ultra settings with Shadow of Mordor or a smooth 120 fps in BF4 but games like Ryse which was running on average around 70-80 was super stuttery. I love how well this card performs on some games but on a few others it's horrible :(. I won't try and get a replacement until I've tried everything I can fix it but I may have to if I can't.

I seemed to have rid myself of the stuttering problem with all my games except Ryse. All I had to do was enable Threaded Optimization and turn the GPU Max Buffered Frames to 4 in the Nvidia Control Panel. I don't know why that worked but if anybody else has the same problem as me then try doing what I did in the Nvidia Control Panel.

you would think the cards could just run a program fast smooth and efficient ? my old card at most all I adjust is over scan and resolution and all runs well - may have to adjust a in game setting or two

maybe these newer cards have been made over complicated to the point it causes its own issues ?? just seems a lot of adjustments to fool with that just aint needed or never needed before and thing were just as fine ??

I see these high end card goofing and guys fixes are like turn down this set max frames to 60 undervolt it and so on -- why would I buy a high end performance card just to start turning things down for ?? I thought I was getting it to crank things up ??
