So this long process with my Lenovo y510p started because I wanted to replace my HDD with a new 500gb 850 SSD about 2 weeks ago. I had noticed my HDD failing slowly....computer would randomly freeze for 2-5 minutes and HDD use would jump to 100%. In task manager HDD use either is 0-2% or 100% when my comp freezes.
I finally bought the SSD and a SATA to USB cable and tried to clone my drive over. It took about 9 hours and when it finally reached 100%, Samsung data migration said it failed and could not migrate due to too many bad parts on my HDD (loosely that terminology, couldn't remember exact)
I then decided to try a fresh install of Win 8 on my SSD, I obtained the recovery discs from Lenovo to install windows because it came preloaded and I needed the OEM version. I set boot options to legacy etc and got the process started
1st attempt- I chose the MFG (i think it's mfg) option which basically installs the software found when I first bought it
My first attempt, the install just stopped during disc 2 (out of 4) during copying recovery.INI
I cancelled and rebooted
second attempt- I chose clean OS option so it doens't have all the drivers that lenovo preinstalls
My second attempt was going well until I hit a snag saying something along the lines of
system.io.io........
exception data error (cyclic redundancy check)
So I had to reboot again
3rd attempt
I tried the MFG option again.......and it didn;t get hung up on copying recovery.INI.
However after inserting the third disc as instructed.... I got the system io io exception data error again
...............
So I took out the SSD from my laptop and put in my old HDD again so I can see what's going on with Samsung magician.
I see that there is 10gb now on the SSD.......
So my thought process is that I need to secure erase my SSD
HOWEVER.
Samsung magician isn't recognizing my SSD because I'm using a sata usb cable.
So my questions:
1. Is there a way I can secure erase my samsung 850 SSD with it being connected with a sata usb cable?
2. Is erasing the SSD and trying again even the right step?
3. What is causing that message system io io .........exception data error?
4. What should I do? Return my SSD and try to get another one?
