ASK: Best CPU and Motherboard for under 300 bucks

I want to upgrade my procie and motherboard. I prefer INTEL and asus mobo, but you can suggest me other brand, and I only have budget around 300 usd.
I don't know what's better, 1155 or 1150? any recommendation?

The xeon is a great value, but if you want soemthing cheaper, get something like this:

I have heard great things about the xeons, if you do upgrade would you be willing to sell your old parts to me? They look better than my setup.

Anyways here is what I would get, but possibly a slightly faster version of the i5

I know. The Xeon is priced such that it absolutely doesn't make any sense to get the weaker i5. If one only needs 4 logical cores, better to get an i3 and put the rest of that money elsewhere.

I never recommend i3s, I believe you need a minimum of four cores

It's been proven that for gaming, the i3 (4 logical cores) keeps up with the i5 (4 logical cores). In synthetic loads that can actually maximize each logical core at 100%, the i3 then takes a 15% penalty due to hyperthreading. But since game engines do not balance loads, nor put all logical cores at 100%, the i3 is the smart guy's choice for gaming.
