I have Performance tier from Comcast. My modem and router are in other room connected to desktop. Speed test results on desktop are always around 30 mbps download. Same test on laptop in other room over wifi (router) are between 14-19 download.
I have moved router around as much as possible and it has helped somewhat.
My uncle uses the desktop and I use laptop.
If I hardwired in directly to the router would I get better speed on laptop? I measured along walls and I would need about 75 feet of cable. Would I loose speed with such a long connection?
I've read that I may loose speed if I got a wifi extender.
My router is a Netgear N600 Dual Band WNDR3400
My Modem is a Motorola SURFboard eXtreme DOCSIS 3.0
Also thinking about an ac router.
I am kind of computer dumb. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Yes, I have a desktop and laptop. Connecting via wifi from my laptop yields slower speed than connecting via ethernet cable.

If you are using 75 feet of cable then I wouldn't recommend a CAT5 cable but I'd recommend a CAT5e at least (better insulation and up to a gigabit bandwidth) or even CAT6 which is better than the previous two mentioned
