GTX 970 or Wait for Pascal (Early/Mid 2016?)

I currently have a GTX 770... with 2GB VRAM, bollocks. 2 years ago I never thought I'd need more for 1080p gaming... so I spared the 30€, oh well.

So what would you do in my situation, I don't have a lot of money to spare, I am planning to purchase a laptop, upgrade to a better smartphone, so there's a lot to buy, but not enough money for everything.

What worries me the most is what if Pascal will set a ground braking performance in 2016, making the 970 just as bad or worse, as my 770 is now compared to 970.

970 isn't exactly earth shattering over a 770 ~4-15 fps better depending on the game I think; it's pretty much like a 780 vs a 770. If you're strapped for cash I'd say it isn't worth upgrading based on VRAM alone because at 1080p for 99% of games you can survive on 2GB; even if they can use more you just dial some settings back.
Ehh, that's still a long time to wait, for the unknown.

I think you really just need 4GBs of VRAM, if you don't want to spend the money for a 970 (and only 3.5 GBs of vram) they make 4GB 960s that actually have 4GBs of VRAM, that'd help with the higher res textures and stuff for things like Watchdogs and GtAV

You may be able to find used 780s as well with 4GBs of ram. I've got a 770 with 4GBs and it's working fine for those higher texture settings.

I think the one's who suggested to stick with the GTX 770 for now, have made a point. The 2GB Vram makes for quite a rough experience, and sets me back on getting the max resolution, which pretty much only requires VRAM, but any GPU performace, which is VERY unfortunate. I would have chosen a 4GB card if I'd have seen that coming..

If I would purchase a 970 with 3.5GB Vram, a year later we will probably see games using even more than that, which would put me in the same position like now. Seeing how the game developers are starting to take advantage of this A LOT now.

So I will wait for the next series and suffer now for a while :(

Thank you everyone for answering and helping me decide!!!!

Confirming that this was a good choice. Especially for my wallet. I still have the same 770, and it's pushing hard. Although on many new games I can still play on high/ultra at 60 fps avg, 1080p. I am hunting for a good GTX 1070 deal now.

So the lesson of the day, you can buy a card every 2nd nvidia series, but don't go for low VRAM/performance. The VRAM might make the difference in the future, and the 10% performance increase from non-reference overclock might aswell help you get through it.
