Hello,

I builing new rig....i planning a 2-way GTX 970 SLI,
but...i dont clearly undetstand she PCIe speeds.....that 16x,8x thing

What is it....how to set it right for SLI,can both GPU be on 16x...or each one using half like 8x+8x or what??

Sorry....but i am seriousle nobb much as i can in this think....please help me understand this thing,
Thanks.

Its the number of lanes that data can travel along to and from the graphics card. How fast they travel depends on whether its version pcie1.0, 2.0 or3.0 that's being used.

The more lanes, the faster your graphics card can go and the higher the version pcie, the faster they can go.

But pcie technology is ahead of how fast the cards themselves can go. pcie2.0 x8 is more than enough for any current graphics card.

I will have ASRock z97 exteme 4.....so if i understand...it will goes 8x/8x,is it enought for two 970??? will GPUs use thier maximum potential even in 8x? GPU is EVGA gtx 970 ftw+

Maximum, no ..... but damn near close to it. Back in the days of PCIE-2 we saw the same thing..... x16 and x8 didn't matter much and then came along games like STALKER that showed as much as a 10% difference on x16 as x8 .... then PCIE-3 came along and PCIE-3 x 8 was ~ PCIE-2 x16 so we haven't really seen any impact .... yet. But that day will come.

But remember STALKER was the biggest one I can remember in that regard but there were others w/ smaller impact such that getting MoBos w/ PLX chips was something that some serious gamers considered to "get more lanes". Today, it's rarely something thought about and when it is, it's usually quickly dismissed. I don't see x8 x8 being "not enough" for some time.
