Hi everyone,

I recently bought an ASUS A555L laptop. It came with Windows 8. I'm a Linux lover so I installed Fedora onto it only to find that there were a bunch of problems and it was very unstable.

I changed back to Windows 8 and reinstalled all the neccessary drivers, but the USB ports were not working. I decided to try Windows 7 because its better than Win8 anyway. Everything works except the USBs.

I've tried almost everything.

Some info about my computer:
ASUS A555LN
OS: Win7 Home Prem 64bit SP1
Intel core i7, 2.40ghz, broadwell u/ult 14nm technology
8 GB dual channel ddr3 @ 798 mhz
Motherboard: ASUSTek computer inc X555LNB
nvidia geforce 840m
terrabyte hardrive

In Device Manager there is a Universal Serial Bus Controller that is up to date but it doesn't seem to be working obviously.

Let me know if you need anything else.

Can anyone help me? I am frazzled.

Thanks a million

I'd recommend a CLEAN install, not just a RE-INSTALL. By now your boot partition is likely fubared. Since it seems you have installation media, I'd save any necessary files to a backup location, boot the windows install, when you get to the window where it asks where you want to install, click the advanced options and delete ALL, every single partition on the drive (Unless you have a separate partition for recovery or have split off another partition for storage, in which case, delete the rest of them including any otherwise hidden or system partitions) and then install to the unallocated space without creating any further partitions or formatting anything. Windows will create the necessary boot and system partitions and perform any necessary formatting. Follow the steps at the following link. I'd also recommend using Windows 8 if you have installation media. If you dislike it due to the metro screens and no normal start menu, you can install Classic shell which returns it to Windows 7 desktop behavior and start menu.

Hi darkbreeze,

Thanks so much for the reply. I've checked the BIOS and legacy USB is enabled. I think you might be right about the clean install so will try that today and post back about how it goes! Thanks so much for the links!

Ive encountered the same issue, A555L Notebook, Windows 7 64bit, no usb.

After searching for a while, i found a driver which solves the problem completely
It might say that there are more updated drivers installed on your machine, but install this one instead, works like a charm for me.
hope it helps.

YOUR link might not have been to an infected file, but then again, it might have. Any driver should be available from Microsoft OR the hardware manufacturer.
