good evening all.
I have an acer aspire 5742, i3-370m processor. it came with 4gb ram (2x2gb)
(o.s is windows 7 home premium in hdd and windows 7 ultimate in ssd, just for the note). i wanted to update ram to 8 gb but had a hellish time looking for the right one. The issue is that default ram was ddr3-10600(that's what was written on the memory sticker), when i bought 2x4gb of same kind system didn't boot, it recognized ram but I couldn't get to see desktop, it went on a rebooting loophole. after that i tried ddr3 pc3-12800, with same results. The guy at the computer shop couldn't find me a pc3-8500 1066...which is, i think, my last hope.
So basically my question is: anyone here has/had same laptop and upgraded memory to 8gb successfully?can you tell me which ram was correct?

i'm fairly upset since i wanted to upgrade memory since January.

sadly i already tried the ddr-12800 but wasn't the right one, looking around i found many sites selling ddr3-8500 for notebook but i still couldn't find out if that one is compatible with my model... crucial says that 12800 was compatible with my model but it wasnt.

I think i know why Crucial site is wrong: it tells me that the acer aspire 5742 supports pc3-12800 but it doesn't contemplate that i'm looking for RAM compatible with an --> i3.-370m processor!!, which is kind of old now. maybe they think the processor is an i5 or i7, thus they give me the wrong info... I'm always more convinced that my fated memory is made of 2x4gb modules pc3-8500.
Anyone knows if i'm right?

To add more info: my 2gb rams stickers say:
SAMSUNG 2GB 2RX8 PC3-10600S 09-10-F2
MADE IN CHINA M471B5673FH0-CH9 1017

So basically i want to know the upgrade of that one. Still i'll say it again: in the computer shop we already tried pc3-12800 and pc3-10600 and neither could make my laptop reach desktop, either freezing at windows' logo or boot-looping.

You actually have 4 more digits on your model# which would help specify which exact laptop you have. The issue may not be speed but rather chip density which most people don't even realize can be a problem. Chip manufacturer may also play a role.
I have never had Crucial supply me ram that did not work and have had excellent results when I needed to invoke their warranty which is only twice in 15+ years.

edit - not that I'm a Crucial rep, I usually build with Corsair ram LoL

now i'm not on my pc so can't know the number. anyways, however I gave my laptop's serial number at a computer shop and we found out that it wasn't on their servers...weird enough there wasn't even a proper memory from any manufacturers, then we implanted an HP memory (just beacause it could stick in) which ran perfectly(lol). atm i'm waiting from ddr3-8500 1.5v memory, if it won't work i guess i'll try to get another 4gb of HP's memory stick. Do you think that's wise?

OK. the correct Memory RAM for ACER ASPIRE 5742(the first of the series but works on many other models) was sodimm pc3-8500 1066 204pin. as suspected had to buy it on it's own without any manufacturer info, dunno why it wasn't there but since i found it now somebody else might have an easier time finding this answer. SO all well that ends well. My regards to all. Now this laptop runs smoother.

Hi,
I am in the middle of the same memory expansion challenge with the same Acer laptop. I tried 5 different SODIMM modules but during Windows boot the system crashed and reboot :-(

Did you install this Kit? CM3X8GSDKIT1066 (http://www.corsair.com/en/cm3x8gsdkit1066)
Thanx!

Bit of a necro...

But for what it's worth, I recently grabbed some "Guaranteed Compatible" Crucial sticks to breathe some life into the laptop.

https://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Acer/aspire-5742

DDR3 PC3-12800 • CL=11 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR3-1600 • 1.35V •

Same issues with the boot loop, laptop running incredibly hot, corrupt display.
(Seems like a voltage issue IMO, and that there are multiple sub-models of this laptop)

-They were happy to RMA
-Then I discovered the chips were working fine in a friend's laptop
-Then they went missing in the post, so I never had the joy of RMAing a second set, lol

My suggestion for upgrading this laptop would be if at all possible to find some sticks you can test in real life before comitting to a purchase.

Cheers.
