Hi,

I have an old Dell XPS 8100 that works great. Below are the specs:

Intel Core i3
RAM 4GM
HD ITB
ATI Radeon HD 5450

However, I am now thinking to upgrade it if possible. For example, upgrading the RAM to 8GB would make and difference ? also, what other components i can upgrade with minimum efforts. would it be too difficult to upgrade from i3 to i5?

any advice would be appreciated

I would upgrade the RAM to 8gb, as it's generally agreed that that is the sweet spot for gaming and general productivity.

Although I don't have experience with multiple OEM computers, I know at least on one I was able to get the processor rather easily, and it was just a normal socket like on one you'd get if you were upgrading. I would assume that all OEMs do that, but I don't have the experience to say for sure, so the easiest way to tell would be to actually poke inside the PC. See if you can tell without taking off the heatsink, cause that'll cause problems if you dont have thermal compound to replace the old.

If the CPU is inside a socket, you should be able to just pop in a new CPU as long as its the same type of socket, which I would assume is LGA1150. Personally I'd recommend the i5-4690. I have the unlocked version and the performance is very nice even on default settings. I think you'll need a new windows key if you upgrade the cpu though. I believe the key is tied to the CPU, so changing it voids windows on the next bootup, and then it starts complaining :p
