I've just installed an ASUS Xonar DSX 7.1 PCIE in my system, making sure to disable the HD audio in the BIOS first.

Firstly the device just came up as a "Audio Multimedia Controller" in the Device Manager with a yellow warning triangle.

The drivers on the CD were only for XP/Vista/Win7 so I tried the official drivers 8.1 from the website (http://www.asus.com/uk/Sound_Cards_and_DigitaltoAnalog_Converters/Xonar_DSX/HelpDesk_Download/) however the install failed and threw up an error.

After a few reboots and reseating the card with no luck I Googled and came up with the UNi Xonar Unified Drivers. I installed these and after a reboot the card appears properly in Device Manager and is selected in the Playback devices panel.

However there is no sound. When I play a known mp3 track in Windows Media Player the Xonar Audio center utility that came with the Unified driver is showing a moving graphic equalizer, and I can see the green volume bar move in the Playback devices panel.

My headphones are plugged directly into the card (not the front panel) and I have tried every Jack socket.

Can anyone help?

System:
ASUS Xonar DSX 7.1 PCIE
Win 8.1
Intel Core i5 4690K
16b RAM
Asus Strix nVidia GeForce GTX 970
Asus Z97 Pro Gamer Z97

**UPDATE**
I've plugged a mic into the card and whilst I can't hear anything I can see the input graph move up and down in Recording devices and Skype Audio test.. so am pretty sure the card is 'working'
