So I recently bought a new laptop, (a Gigabyte) and I wanted to use Bitlocker to encrypt my files. To do this I need my windows 8.1 product key, which I don't have ---- just the software on my laptop. How can I locate it ?

Beyond this, if there are any other, better encryption software please let me know !

Thanks!

They are almost always kept on the Windows socket on the bottom of the laptop.

Sometimes it can wear of though and leave you without one. But if the laptop is new don't worry it will be on it

For a prebuilt system with Win 8.1, your license key is embedded into the motherboard.
BitLocker is only available with Win 8.1 Pro and Enterprise. Do you have one of those versions?

Right. BitLocker is only available with Pro or Enterprise.

Alternatives?
The semi-defunct TrueCrypt
Or VeraCrypt.

Be careful if you are trying to use whole disk encryption.

Why do you say to be careful if doing a whole disk encryption?

By 'semi-defunct' TrueCrypt what do you mean ?

Yeah I know, thats why I wasn't sure why you mentioned that .... or what "semi-defunct" means.

Beyond that, are you saying in general to be careful of encrypting an entire disk? Why?

Thanks!
