My main uses for this build will be running kodi, and using plex to stream 1080p mkvs from another pc.
I don't plan to play games on this, or add extra storage. Will be using Windows 8.1 as my OS

Here is what I have come up with so far

CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor ($134.98 @ DirectCanada)
Motherboard: MSI H81I Mini ITX LGA1150 Motherboard ($73.50 @ DirectCanada)
Memory: Patriot Signature 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($63.49 @ DirectCanada)
Storage: Sandisk Solid State Drive 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($59.99 @ Memory Express)
Case: Silverstone ML05B HTPC Case ($50.25 @ shopRBC)
Power Supply: Silverstone 300W 80+ Bronze Certified SFX Power Supply ($56.08 @ DirectCanada)
Total: $438.29

I am not too sure whether the i3 is overkill for my needs, but ive read that running plex you need a good cpu.

I am hoping not to exceed $500, if i can cut costs somewhere than the better.

Solution
It should work well .
The only caveat would be that the intel graphics driver is rubbish . In order to make it idiot proof they have made it uncustomizable except via digging deep in config files . Should be fine if your screen/tv is fairly new . If its older and there is no inf file available set up will suck , and if its anything like mine it some days wants to revert to defaults despite my set up options

My tv is a Sony Bravia from 2011 if that means anything. Since you mentioned the igpu, would I be better off going with an amd apu instead? How would an apu fair against an i3?
