I want to expand my gaming setup to a 3 monitor 1080p surround setup.
I game on a single GTX 970 g1 gaming that runs perfectly for my current needs, however I've heard that the stuttering tears the 970 in higher resolutions.

I bought my 970 at release, that means before the known problem with the VRAM, so i can get a full return if i want to.

My question is. Should I return the 1 970 and get an 295x2 or should i buy a second 970?

I've heard it wouldn't be a problem for the 970's at 5760x1080p.

I have a 700watt PSU so i know i could just BARELY boot with the 295x2, but I might get a 850 watt PSU anyway since i want modular PSU.

I know the cons of the 295x2 but could it in ANY WAY be worth it to go for the 295x2 over the 970's?

According to Tom's:

At $550, the GeForce GTX 980 delivers such compelling frame rates that we find it hard to recommend multi-card configurations able to serve up better performance per dollar, since they sometimes suffer from inconsistent results in comparison to a graphics card with a single GPU.

Like we mentioned on the first page of this piece, though, the best reason to consider CrossFire or SLI is for playable performance at 3840x2160. In that situation, you want cards with plenty of on-board memory. Two GeForce GTX 970s would be a great place to start, followed by a pair of 980s, if you have the cash. A couple of Radeon R9 290Xes would make our list, though the 295X2 makes that option redundant.

That PSU requirements link was very nice indeed!
Thank you very much!

Anyway my biggest question is: Would the 3,5gb problem be present often on 5760x1080? I figure it wouldn't since 4k is higher resolution and I haven't heard that much about the stutter problem.

Depends on the game. These are the links that matter.

And yes the 295x2 does win overall but it's not by much at all. Once you factor in the extra cost of a 1000w power supply vs a 700w unit needed for 2 x GTX 970s and the extra heat of the 295x2 it becomes a much closer choice as well.

295x2 is just 10% faster than 2x 970s in BF4. That result is reversed with different games (Hitman, Bio Shock, Thief).

They are both ~ the same price depending on what/where you buy, but 3x 970's would use less power than a 295x2.

I feel that the 970 will be the easiest way around it. They are CHEAPER to run, not that my power bill is a problem. I think the 970 in SLI wold be the way to go!
