I have a Toshiba L655 lap top that the hard drive has possibly failed. I have an error that comes up that the p/c can't communicate with the drive or possibly the cdrom. It won't boot up in safe mode. It gets stuck on windows loading files and doesn't continue. If I replace the hard drive can I still recover the data on it with one of those data transfer devices, or would I have to send it in to a place like "Drive Solutions".

Hi there Hockeydad39,

You can attach the drive to another system either externally with SATA to USB cable or internally through SATA.(Keep in mind that taking the drive out of the laptop could void the warranty if still under any)
After that, you can run some data recovery tools. This way, you should recover at least some of the data unless the drive is completely dead.

Also, I would recommend to perform a clean install. Some users use cloning tools when getting a new drive to transfer everything on it. Though, as it is highly probable that your drive is suffering from bad sectors, I wouldn't recommend that. After you recover your data, I guess you...

After you recover your data, I guess you can test the drive with a brand specific testing tool.

In case the drive can't be accessed by software tools, I guess you should contact some data recovery company.

Hope this will help,
