I had a shipping snafu and it seems the card i ordered is being returned. I was set on it at the time but after doing more research and having a bit more money in my pocket i was thinking of snagging a nicer card.

I primarily game 1080p my current rig is as follows:
CPU: i5 4690k
Mobo: Asrock Fatal1ty z97
RAM: 16gb Corsair Vengeance 1866
HDD: SanDisk Extreme SSD 240 GB
Graphics: GTX 570 -> Replacement in question

Is the performance difference worth the extra $100+ for one of these nicer cards? I am currently playing FFXIV and GTA V regularly. I would like to play Star Citizen and Witcher 3 at close to max settings if possible.

Solution
None of the offerings out there right now, except a Titan X or several cards in SLI will handle Star Citizen on max. This is a game for PC gamers, by PC gamer, no console porting, low gfx horseshit...So for that game, you may have to dig a lot deeper than a single gpu solution...for max settings that is.

As for your question, people say the 970 beats the 290x here and there, generates less heat and draws less power...

I am an Nvidia man, however I am sceptical about the whole 3.5 +0.5 ram thing (the later working far slower than the bulk).

The latest games, especially GTA 5 and new titles coming are and will be very heavy on buffering. The more Vram you have, when gaming at high resolutions and settings, the better it will be.

This is one reason I am still hanging on to my old Titan. It has 6gb of vram which comes in super handy at over 1080p.

So I think the 290x with "real" 4gb or even an 8gb model is the better choice over a 970.

A 980 does show more performance, however it is expensive and the price isn't proportionate to its advantage over the 290x.

My main advice, especially for future proofing: Get VRAM and get as much as possible per single GPU!!!

This isn't a very clever comment and doesn't give a real reason for or against AMD

Nissan make "budget" cars, however they make one car which SMASHES cars 3 times the price and more...So what is your point?

I would choose the 970. I've had both cards. In all instances, the 970 performed better.. slightly, but still noticeably. Problem is that amd hasn't put out any drivers since dec.

Well looks like the shipping got cleared up and the package was now delivered. I kind of hate USPS. I may be able to unlock this card to the R9 290x anyways so i guess i'll see if this card can be unlocked and go from there. If nothing else i'll bank the money and get the next gen graphics cards when they hit later this year.

Yes and no Screwby, the base driver is still from Dec but they just released a beta driver on 4/13 for GTA V

I am not sure I would hang on to the 290 and clock the crap out of it. You may aswell get a guaranteed 290x and take that up to its limits.

Either way, enjoy!
