Hey guys!

So here's my question. Do you guys think a Q6600 will be good enough to run Plex Media Server. I know it's not powerful enough to do major transcoding but I was hoping it could handle direct streaming of all video (and the server would just have to transcode, or remux, the audio). If I chose this route I would have to buy a new HSF as the old one broke and would also have to buy a PSU for it.
My other option would be to wait until I get enough money to upgrade my FX 8320 to an i7 (DDR4 based) processor.

Generally, I am just wondering if the Q6600 would be good enough to be used as a media server.

Thanks!

Should work just fine. I'm using a Q6600 with 4gb ram (damn you ECC ram so hard to find without costing $$$), for streaming to my apple tv with on the fly transcoding to .m4v. This used to take about 80% on my e6700 and using about 40% now on a Q6600 so for at least two streams shouldn't be bottlnecking.

Though have to say I've been thinking about getting an 8320 too, looks really good, especially with a used or refurb motherboard. For less than $200 could make a banging media server.

Thank you! That is wonderful to know. I was contemplating on buying a FX 8320E and a better Motherboard (I have a Asus M5A97 R2.0) then using the better Mobo for my current build and using my old one for the Media Center. Problem is, is that if I'm going to spend the money I'd rather get an upgrade on my current CPU. Too bad the upgrade worth while is probably on the Intel side and that would cost me way to much money at this time. I have all my media running off my current build and I'd just like to take the load off the main computer and give it a dedicated one!

Oh, and one more thing. Is ECC ram worth having? I was just going to use the 2x2GB DDR2 Sticks I had lying around as the Mobo supports DDR2. Don't want to spend too much! haha

Thanks for your input!

Well mine is an old xw4400 workstation with a server motherboard so I have to use ECC. Is it necessary? Not really, it also depends on if your motherboard supports it as well. My pickle right now to upgrade to max ram I'd have to pay $150 for ECC unbuffered memory, which I'm not willing to spend. Especially when you you can get a 8320e with mobo for lol $120 http://www.microcenter.com/site/products/amd_bundles.aspx

As it is I'd stay, like myself with the Q6600 until your going to build yourself a primary computer. New Intel CPUs (broadwell) are coming this summer.

I totally agree with you! I think if I go forward I'll go with like unRaid instead of freeNAS due to the hardware requirements for FreeNAS OS. I want to use the Q6600 but I'm starting to think it would be a waste of money. I'd need to get a new case + PSU + Heat sink Fan. That would be like $50 for a good case with lots of HDD space, $26.99 for a CX430M, and $25.00ish for the HSF. Not a lot but that could all go towards a new build haha. It's just that the HSF is broken! ahhh! Maybe I'll see if I can get my old AMD HSF to work on it lol.
